Third gear blown?

It really isn't hard to do. If you have no plans for it, I will take it.

Well, DiS, CustomMSP and I pulled my trans today and tore it down...

Pic 1 - there is a magnet inside the trans. It picked up a lot of the busted teeth. Genius.

Pics 2,3 - 3rd gear. 0wn3d.

Pic 4 - How the hell do I get this thing off????? Anyone???

Pic 5 - New impact gun. Badass.

Soo...apparently I need a press to remove the gears??? Never heard this before...

dadrgon: wonderful
dadrgon: go buy a press
Kooldino: aren't presses big and $?
dadrgon: get a 20 ton press and you can rebuild the tranny
Kooldino: can't I rebuild it by hand?
dadrgon: nein
Kooldino: what? are you sure?
dadrgon: n00b, I ******* rebuilt trannys before
dadrgon: no way you can get a gear out without a press
Kooldino: I've gotten several out without a press

lol!!! I can back it up! CustomMSP and I were standing today next to Kooldino as he was pulling the gears by hand!

btw, Kooldino, send me those pics that I took today....by email THANKS!

Yeah, you don't need a press to remove a gear. I was just telling dana about when I burned my first transmission. I sheered three entire teeth just from hardshift while auto-crossing. From the way the gear is orbitally sheered its just from the torque dumping on the gear. It happens, but focus is right, it's not so much from the strength of the gear, it's from weak lubrication. A stonger gearset won't necessarily solve the problem. Maybe some sort of tranny cooler or re-designed lubrication system would help. At least these trannies are easy to get..

Why bother changing gears on the shafts. Just drop in the mainshaft and output shaft right in to your casing complete.

Well, I was thinking of getting them treated, in which case I'd have to pull the gears all off, right?

Also, to replace the whole shaft, I'd need ALL of those gears.

If I treat them, it should make them even harder, right?

Also, rumor has it that we can take 5th gear out of a 626, and it will make it taller?

It could soften it... it COULD make it harder... but not likely/no guarantee....

No idea on the 626 gear.

I thought I heard somewhere that you could use the 626 gear to make 5th taller as well. It was in an OLD thread.. Yeah, Dana, 3rd gear was gone on me last year as well. When driving around, I can hear the gears..even on my current tranny...lol. There is a small amount of 'wine". When I broke 3rd last year, if I tried to go into hear, it was horrible. The sound.

The 626 gear will work, but you have to have some serious power to support a gear that tall. You are better off with 5th from the 323 GT-R or GT-X tranny.

Do you know what the ratio is of the 626 gear?

IIRC, the 323 GTX gear is a .717 ratio and stock is a .755?

Well, thanks to the help of CustomMSP and Rush, we got the new (used) trans in and running last night.

Now to rebuild my stock trans...

Glad to hear it :).

Now hopefully one of the transmission solutions all in the works will go through and everyone can be happy and set with good trannie's... I know it is holding me up personally! I want to up that damn boost past 13 psi... but the car pulls so damn hard as is I'm worried about losing the tranny.

Oh great, now I'm leaking trans fluid out of the TOP of the trans...at the seam where the trans splits in two.

If need be, can i pull this thing in half ON the car?
