I have just bought my very first Miata, I have wanted one of these cars for a very long time, Im a 240sx freak and I have owned 12 of them , Turboed and such, BUT its time to change it up.
This is my Dilema, I have bought a 1995 Mazda Miata 5 spd with a blown motor ( ROD THROUGH BLOCK) I went with a Japanese Motor Which came with the ECU, Harness, Engine and TRANS. The engines look basically the same BUT, the AC is a bit differant and I noticed the Cam Sensor is on a differant side of the head as well as a few other Intake sensors being differant...
My Question, CAN i bolt this motor in Direct or do a i have to switch out the Intake and sensors...PLEASE I WANT TO GET THIS CAR UP AND RUNNING BAD, I have been Dying to drive one of these...

OH...If anyone has anything to say PLEASE im on AOL instant messager,
C9P7D
Im almost always on.

do you have pics?

the 1.6l CAS is mounted to the intake side, and the 1.8l is mounted to the exhaust side.

Here are the pictures of what I have..The Head alone is the 1995 STOCK motors head, The one together is the new Motor I got from the Japanese importer..He said that this will bolt it and be direct. Let me know..what i need to do to get this bad boy in here..

If i were you. I would just replace the head since it's all out of the car. this could save you a lot of "conversion" troubles. Also, RE-SEAL THE WHOLE MOTOR!!! Please redo all the seals (oil pan, front and read main, cam seals).
if you have more questions i would go to www.miata.net they have a forum there as well as links to an unbelivable amount of information.

Unfortunatly I cant reuse the Other head, It has multiple Bent Valves and the Combustion Chamber has been Damaged...What to do now, What do I need to convert this 1.6 into my 1.8 Chassis car

They sent you a B6ZE (1.6L). If you wanted to, it'll bolt right in to the car with very few problems. However, you'd end up with 116 BHP vs the 135 of the 1.8L.

Many folks replace the 1.6L with the 1.8 and only have to change a couple of things. The J-spec 1.6L is identical to the US engine, so there's nothing special about the one you received.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news :(.

To swap this engine in, you'll need to find some way of using the throttle body from your old 1.8. You'll need to make an adaptor plate or find a way to make the TPS sensor work with the 1.6L TB. Perhaps you could modify Flyin' Miata's 1.6 to 1.8 TB adaptor plate to work for you http://www.flyinmiata.com/index.php?deptid=4535&parentid=0&stocknumber=05-40000. Additionally, the CAS and coils from the 1.8 will have to be used as well. Aside from that, it should be just like installing another 1.8L. You shouldn't have to change the harness or ECU at all.

A 1.8L long block from a 90-94 Protege LX or 91-96 Escort GT will work (they're the same BP05 engines found in the Miata). Have a look at your local junkyard, these engines are quite common. Just swap over your manifolds, oil pan, front (you'll have to remove a freeze plug for this one) and rear water necks, valve cover, swap the disty for the CAS, and a few other odds and ends that escape my mind and you'll be set. It shouldn't take long to swap these parts.

Got the motor in and it runs great, It doesnt have much power though...Maybe i messed up the timing or something,

did you put in the 1.6 or did you get a 1.8?

Try www.mazmart.com. They usually have good prices. They specialize in rotary engines, but you can get a 1.8L for pretty cheap. Don't expect to find a 1.6L tho. All the Spec Miata guys buy those.

1.6's are a dime a dozen. Shoot, I scored 1.5 of them for nothing :D.

Really? Last time I checked they had nothing for 1.6L's but had 1.8L's all over the place. Weird, because I know that "most" Spec Miata drivers use the 1.6L since it's cheaper to repair and there are more junker engines around. I dunno...

I put a 1.8 In it, Im actually parting out teh old Stuff...
I have
1.8 Head, Not sure if its still good for anything,
1.8 Injectors
Intake maifold
and I also have a Tubular Manifold
AND a HEADER...Seems like a decent one..

How much do you want for the header or tubular manifold? Where are you located? Pics?

As far as your car feeling slower, where did you set the diming?

can't you turbo the crap out of that 1.6 now though? (naughty)

The 94-97 1.8L BP's can handle just as much boost as the 1.6's. :D A hair less for the 99+ BPs .
