Several years ago I bought some generic drain plug washers "compatible with Mazda Part# 9956-41-400" assuming they'd be fine. They looked just like OEM washers. Several weeks after having used one of them when I did and oil change (drain plug torqued to spec), I noticed some seepage at the plug.
I checked the thickness of the remaining unused washers with a micrometer and discovered several of them to be of slightly different thickness at various locations around the circumference. The difference was not enough to be apparent to the naked eye but easily detected with the micrometer.
I don't know if the one that leaked was of uneven thickness before I installed it, but I have my suspicions.
After that experience, I've used only genuine Mazda OEM washers. I've measured them with the micrometer and have found them to all be of equal thickness around the entire circumference. I haven't had any more leaks.
