Mazda teasing all new 2026 CX-5!

@Lazy2.5 I do not see much difference between crossovers like the CX-5 and Euro touring wagons like the BMW 5 Series, Mercedes, and Volvo wagons. I own a BMW 5 Series wagon and love it but my CX-5 is way more reliable. Both are capable in winter driving with appropriate tires but the rear drive car absolutely needs snow tires in winter conditions to be safe. My BMW is an older model with a true limited slip rear diff. It is great fun to drive in snow when equipped with good snow tires. FWIW, I also own a 2003 BMW 540i M Sport sedan with 6 spd manual. I don't own a modern sedan but also don't feel the need with my E39 still going strong. If I wanted a modern sedan, I would look at a rear wheel drive Lexus GS model. Shame that Mazda discontinued the 6 Series. It was a great sedan.

I was hoping that there would be sedan based on the large platform. I am now concerned about the new CX-5 forcing us to use the touchscreen to change anything, as that would suggest that all future Mazdas would do the same. Only one more week before we find out.

...But the biggest issue is that he mentioned that there are no longer any controls or knobs and that everything is controlled through the touch screen. 😡 That would be a deal breaker for any future Mazda for me. ...

Yep, that's a hard NO for me.

Someone on Reddit mentioned they have seen the vehicle and it sounds like they are a dealer. They mentioned that the word MAZDA is on both the rear hatch and on the steering wheel, replacing the logo. The Hybrid SkyActiv-z will be replacing the Turbo engine which suggests it could be both fuel efficient and high performance. Mazda has claimed it will have the largest backseat space in the segment (I guess we will see on that).

But this would also explain what Mazda Germany was referring to with "uncluttered interior" for the new CX-5.

We will find out in a week.

Sorta like the MX30? I could see that.

I completely missed that little tidbit before replying.

I really hope this isn't true as it would make the decision to get a newer Mazda very hard. Our 2019 Jeep Compass had knobs and buttons but some features (heated seats, steering wheel) were only operational via the touchscreen. When the touchscreen died in late October and wasn't replaced until December, it was a PITA not being able to access these features.

Just read that thread and at some point somebody says that Mazda will discontinue the CX-5 Turbo starting with 2026 model. I am no expert but I find that hard to believe. Turbo offers more HP than the N/A, faster etc etc... Why would Mazda cancel it?

Maybe because nowadays you can make an hybrid with the same or better torque/horsepower and a lot higher fuel efficiency than the turbo. That is pretty much where the entire industry is shifting, and also where the demand is. Regular engine variants are sitting on dealer lots while there is a long wait list for hybrid variant of the same car. The CX-70/90 has an hybrid with similar power and torque than the high output inline 6 variant.

Hopefully they keep the turbo around, but from a market perspective I could see them replacing it with a high output hybrid

The turbo is conservative, if tuned well the hybrids could never keep up with it.

But Mazda never did tune it well (256hp out of a 2.5l turbo isn't very impressive - most other makes use a 2.0l Turbo and make more hp than Mazda). Most folks don't want to mess with aftermarket tuning as it's quite finicky. It will be sad to see the turbo cancelled, but I get it as the MPG is pretty bad. The bad part of this equation is it sounds like we will only have a NA 2.5 to start (2026 models) and this will likely be way down on power compared to the 2.5T. We will be waiting another year for a "performance" version. Final specs should be out in a few days, but I suspect I will again be disappointed as I was when the CX-70 was revealed and shown to simply be a 5 seater CX-90. I really don't care for the MAZDA lettering on the hatch either. Didn't Mazda just license a new version of the logo? What will it be used for if they aren't putting logos on the cars anymore?

The CX-5 is not a crssover, it is a small SUV.
The CX-30 is a crossover vehicle.
I believe a vertical height of between a sedan and SUV is what commonly is used to define a crossover.
Everything you named is a marketing term, not anything to do with the actual construction of the vehicle. In Michigan, they'll all say "wagon" on the registration.

The definition of these terms are fluid and depends on who you ask. From what I’ve read, SUV originated with vehicles that were adapted from”real” trucks that had body on frame construction. The term CUV referred to vehicles that had unibody construction like cars. I remember when vehicles like the CR-V and RAV-4 came out they were being referred to as Cute-UVs.

Of course, nowadays, these terms are applied to any vehicle that has a lifted (compared to cars) appearance and a boxy rear end with lift gate instead of a trunk. I have a Kia Niro that they want to call an SUV. And the the Subaru CrossTrek and Outback too.

This is also how I think of them.

A Suburban is an SUV.

A CX-5 is a CUV.
