I was going to buy a CR-V...Not anymore

I was going on a 3 day trip to Niagara Falls. Thought it would be the perfect time. Rented an Escape instead. Yea.... DIDN'T BUY ONE if that tells ya anything. :D

lol...don't blame you there..

Why don't you like it? We have a 2018 and our idle is fine and on the highway we get 36 MPG, which I assume is from the cylinder deactivation
7eregrine expressed my concerns on cylinder deactivation very well but missed one. I keep my vehicles forever, and my main concern on CD has always been the long-term reliability. If I replace my car once for every 3~4 years, CD won*t be my major concern other than a personal believe not to buy something the design theory is flawed.

As whether or not the occasionally rough idle at the stop light on 2018 CX-5 is related to CD of course is my guess. We*ve seen such report only on 2018 CX-5. IMO it*s the bugs in new ECM firmware, which can*t handle certain situation making the idle control out of whack. Of course this doesn*t mean every 2018 CX-5 owner would experience this.

Well put. Longevity is the concern. If you have your car during warranty then it wouldn't be an issue. If you've ever had the valve cover off of a running engine you could see that the valve train is a very busy part of it, maybe some one could get a video of this somewhere. I don't see solenoids as a good addition to the mix. Add to the fact that there's fuel oil dilution, burnt fuel byproducts, possible sludge buildup over time, heat,... just seems like a bad soup to put electronic devices into. Doesn't seem like a recipe for success.

What rental companies offer CX5's?!? I ask because I wanted to rent one before I bought mine and could find NO ONE that had them.

Harrisburg, PA - Mazda3s, CX3s and CX5s. I have driven a 3 twice in the twisties around Harrisburg and north through those forests. They have rental cars and few are Mazdas. I would assume there are few sales just to attract more customers? or some rental companies may buy these for certain reasons. PA is Mazda heavy so is TX and CA.

Another question for everyone. We live in Virginia, so not a lot of snow but my wife insists she wants AWD. Can I get your input on your preference and why?

Proper tires are more important, but I recommend AWD.
The car is mostly FWD under normal conditions, but AWD will get you out of some situations more easily.
And it's only 1-2mpg difference. No brainer for us in NYC.

Just a report I heard same day as thread... probably not endemic to the line but apparently a couple thousand to repair on this freak incident (new rear door being ordered). Glad it isn't my rig.. who knows what else wasn't tightened down properly.

That's nothing, mazda sent out a mass recall because they forgot to make sure the gas tank on the cx5 shouldn't have sharp bolts around it, wasnt it? Also they forgot to paint something and the hatch struts broke?

Cmon..I'm much more concerned with the fuel dilution of the 1.5T than some freak hatch strut incident.

If youre at all worried about selling it down the road, Id go with AWD. When I got around to selling my CX-7 earlier this year, a ton of buyers got turned off when I told them it was FWD. Whether justified or not, people simply expect SUVs to be AWD.

If you ever park outside overnight, Id go with AWD. It does come in handy when you get trapped in a parking spot with a heap of snow after they plow the lot. I experienced this quite a bit living in an apartment complex.

Any time someone needs a jackrabbit start on even wet pavement AWD shines... not even talking snow or ice. I will never purchase a FWD vehicle ever again. My '02 Maxima GLE that my CX-5 replaced back in '14 was my last FWD vehicle. I would consider a RWD only for summer only fun.

I have 3 6,000 mi UOAs coving 54,000 miles on my 2014 CX5 and all demonstrated less than 0.5 fuel dilution. I feel that HONDA didn't do sufficient testing and went to market too soon. However; HONDA UOAs have demonstrated no wear issues, even with higher than normal fuel dilution. Ed

Thanks everyone. I have my eyes set on a black on black 2018 GT AWD with 14k miles. Gonna try and pull the trigger tomorrow. Any suggestions on negotiating tips?

A lot of topics get recycled here over the years. If more people would search, they'd probably get a more informative answer from people who don't frequent this forum anymore.

If search worked better on this board, more people might use it. It's the worst I've encountered in many years.

Yeah, whine about the power when you drive it and then Google it and then exclaim that the 2019 will have a turbo and show the sales rep the articles and database mazda has listing it and then act like youd rather wait and get the new turbo model.

This. Also, fwd and rwd wont make it to my house without drama.
