I was going to buy a CR-V...Not anymore

Hello all, I was days away from buying a CR-V until I learned about its oil dilution issues (among other issues). Long story short the CX-5 was number two on my list and is now number 1. but now Im wondering are there any common issues I should know about before I make the purchase?

Im looking to buy a used 2018 Grand Touring and was surprised to find quite a few around my area. Why are people turning them in?

Thanks!

No idea why people are turning them in. If you can, I'd suggest waiting to buy until the 2019 is announced. You may be able to negotiate a better deal (if you choose to buy new). Otherwise, the gen1 CX-5s are slightly faster than the 17-18, but just barely.

Something isn't right. Perhaps the site is bundling 2017s as 2018s?

1,185 2018s across entire USA. I would say thats pretty normal and not high at all. Already 18s were sold for 6-7 months. Some are dealer demos. Within a geography you will likely find 40 or less and in most smaller cities about 10-15.

1,185 / 637 dealers = 1.86 per dealer.

Guess it could be correct.... but probably a pretty diverse spread among small vs larger dealers.

Is it only me or do other members feel that to create a new thread a member needs to be active for a week and have 10 or 5 posts at least?

meh, seems like it would discourage new members. Seems like a lot of forums are the same 12 people...

Young co-worker of mine does some detail work on the side for a local Honda dealer. He showed me a picture of a 2019 CR-V he was going to work on for a new vehicle that had been sold. He went to open the rear powered hatch and one of the struts literally broke loose and went straight up through the rear part of the door. The powered strut was sticking out the top side of the rear door of the un-lifted door I want to say like 5-8 inches. I assume the top bolts weren't tightened at the factory... no clue about the stock setup of system though.

That's nothing, mazda sent out a mass recall because they forgot to make sure the gas tank on the cx5 shouldn't have sharp bolts around it, wasnt it? Also they forgot to paint something and the hatch struts broke?

Cmon..I'm much more concerned with the fuel dilution of the 1.5T than some freak hatch strut incident.

My Gen1 CX-5 has been fantastic. Just finished another roadtrip. 1200 miles altogether figuring the 1000ish for the trip and 200 for random other driving.

Been very happy with the car.

Agreed. Ill always go new too unless therere added features I dont like such as cylinder deactivation on 2018 CX-5.

Why don't you like it? We have a 2018 and our idle is fine and on the highway we get 36 MPG, which I assume is from the cylinder deactivation

A major difference between your 2016.5 and 2017 CX-5*s and new 2018 CX-5 is 2018 has newly added cylinder deactivation. Although the long-term reliability issues have been proven by others, but we have also seen complaints here on rough idle at stop lights from 2018 CX-5 owners, which didn*t happen on 2017 and prior MY*s CX-5*s.

I share your dislike for the CD, but there's no evidence of CD and rough idle being linked. In fact, the ones I've driven were remarkably smooth and the transition between 2 and 4 cylinder activation couldn't be detected.

Because other companies that tried using it had problems. That's his #1 reason. Plus the supposed gain on paper is 1 mpg. Is it worth it for 1 mpg?
These are usually the things he says. Am I right yrwie? [emoji16]
I disagree with him except, honestly, on the last point.
1 mpg? Are you sure you're getting 36? I don't think anyone with an 18 that's not a diesel has reported such a great number.
Unlike yrwie, I wouldn't let this keep me from buying.
Yrwie is a pessimist, too. [emoji1787]
lao agree with Madar. The rough idle is not because CD. It would be much more widespread if it was.

You don't know that, no one does. If these things are problematic it won't be known for another year or two if any. I merely threw it out there in another post as a possibility because it being new tech, and it is. I just don't see a reason to point to it every time rough idle is mentioned on a 2018. Yrwei52 is certainly entitled to his opinion of his dislike of CD and I share it.

Correct, and I agree as well. Don't want CD in any of my cars either.

My buddy has it in his 2015 truck as well and highly dislikes it. There's a fix for it for him though, a $200 Plug and play chip that tunes it out. Worth every penny. He's getting the same mpg with and without it basically too. Probably helps a little to have 8 gears, but no more CD...

What's "quite a few"? People here are pretty damn happy with their cars. Myself included.

I've read on CRV forums and other websites of people wanting to trade in their CRV or non buying a new one due to the oil dilution issue. But its more about colder environments. Might be a bit blown out of proportion but then again you never know.

Wow!! I posted a question and waited a couple of days to come back expecting a couple of answers. But 35 responses instead? This is literally 1 more reason to buy a CX5! Seriously!

So yes, what Ive noticed checking the vehicle history on some of this is that they were rentals. Will this scare you away? I tried using this as a negotiating factor at a dealership but the sales person came back and said they buy rentals because they know theyve been maintained properly... good point but on the other hand people renting the car are driving it like its not theirs...

Anyways a used 2018 GT AWD with 14-16k miles goes for 26-28 in my area. That sounds like a decent difference compared to new. And thats the reason Im considering them.

As adviced above I am considering waiting for the 2019s to possibly get a better deal on a 2018.

Thanks for all the great feedback!

But I'm not? IMO 'rough idle' is not a CD issue. Better?

What rental companies offer CX5's?!? I ask because I wanted to rent one before I bought mine and could find NO ONE that had them.

I drove a couple as loaners from the dealership whenever I bring mine in for service.

I was going on a 3 day trip to Niagara Falls. Thought it would be the perfect time. Rented an Escape instead. Yea.... DIDN'T BUY ONE if that tells ya anything. :D
