Sports mode keeps the vehicle atleast in 4th gear predominantly at higher revs so you are in the optimum power band.

Every time I watch one of those videos, I feel my checkbook jump out of my pocket.
I was actually wondering about the Manual Shift Mode, and whether keeping the car in 5th @ 80MPH helped acceleration.

I'll go you one better.
There is a video review on Edmunds site, and the guy absolutely gushed over the CX-5. His only dings were the lack of Apple Play and some Android technology, the low-voltage USB ports up front that cannot be used to charge (even though someone else said "Handy charging ports"), and the slow-response when in manual shift mode. Other than that, it was a "best in class."
Then I watched <i>another</i> Edmunds video where they compared the CX-5, the RAV4 and the CR-V on their test track. There were three guys, each of which championed one of those vehicles while the other two were kibitzing passengers. The guy who gushed over the CX-5 in his solo video was now representing the RAV4. While he didn't have much good to say about it ("It is at the end of its design life"), when he was the passenger in the CX-5 that someone else was championing, he was a lot less gushing than when he was the star of his own CX-5 video. I wanted to backhand my monitor.

Slow response in manual shift mode?
While my previous cars were a manual and an automatic that didn't have any manual mode, I feel that the manual mode in the CX-5 is fantastic, responsive, and helps in the engagement factor. To clear the confusion, you can use it for all gears. Manual mode definitely comes in handy.

His exact words were "There is a manual mode. But there's a little delay on response. It's not exactly the sportiest thing in the world." But he did not put it through its paces on video. The vid Xeler8ing posted shows just the opposite.
Of course, most things I've asked are easily done away with during a test drive. But there are so many features to test in so many conditions that it's tough to do without actually driving the thing around for at least a day or so...it's so much to cram into a single drive. I walked away with a long list of things to look at next time.

I suppose somebody else leaned over and took the photo at 120 mph.Some people wold want you to think the CX-5 is a pig in this department.
Its adequate for the highway. I have no problem merging onto the autobahn.

You know, I'll have to ask.
This is a pretty rural area I moved to in 2010. I actually know the sales manager's father because his father is my neighbor's cousin, and I let his father bring friends over to hunt every so often (I got property). I'm also with a non-profit that does home repairs for poor folks, and we recently worked on the sale manager's grandmother's home. He & I discovered all this because I recognized the name when I walked in.
So I'm almost family

Manual shift mode is just that - you manually control the gear changes
I leave mine in auto mode pretty much 98% of the time. The 6 speed automatic transmission is one of the best out there and is smart enough to change several gears in one hit when needed.

Finding them by the same publication at the same time (as you well know, time of day/ambient temp, etc. means a lot, especially to an engine that loves to pull timing, easily can cost a few tenths) is the issue, but I challenge you to find ANY CX5 of ANY year and ANY configuration tested by ANY reputable (not Bubba with his Timex) source that is faster than the one I liked you to, which happens to be AWD.

I think you just think you get improvement. Sport mode will do nothing for you.

I use it to drown out passenger chatter.
