Thanks man. I really appreciate the acceleration! Doesn't sound like a diesel at all when driving normally.

Because they have "Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control, which reduces and suppresses knocking noise. It all adds to a smooth, quiet drive"

I tested it even with the hood up, CX-5 facing a wall, engine is really quiet compared to typical diesel engines. At first I thought it was just those added padding, insulation and double seal but it's more. Perhaps the lower displacement and compression ratio also plays a factor.

I wonder what the technology behind that "Natural Sound Smoother and Natural Sound Frequency Control". The F112 by Toyota "tunes" the overall sound via air intake.

"Diesel knock reduced with SKYACTIV-D for a more pleasant engine sound

Mazda focused on the relationship between pressure waves (vibrations) resulting from engine combustion, the cause of engine knock, and the resonant frequency of parts (structural resonance) to offer a quieter ride, especially in the louder frequency bands. This technology is standard equipment.*3

Natural Sound Smoother

  • A damper incorporated into the piston pin reduces knock at around 3.6 kHz, which is caused by vibration of the pistons and connecting rods upon combustion.

Natural Sound Frequency Control

  • Mazda found that knock increases around 1.3 kHz, 1.7 kHz and 2.5 kHz because peak engine vibration and peak structural vibration coincide. By controlling fuel injection timing to within 0.1 millisecond, engine vibration is used to cancel out structural vibration, thereby reducing knock"

This is an awesome Diesel engine. is it coming to North America for the Mazda 6?

Stupid efficiency regulations here in North America... and the gas here is terrible compared to Europe.

My Mazda6 was a California model meaning it had to meet California emissions. Probably the strictest in the world. I had an extra emissions filter in my stock intake system. I cut that thing off!!!

This only comes with I Stop but you can “save trees” with the number of minutes the engine is temporarily shut down;
