Filling up an odd thing happened.

I was out of gas and stopped to fill up my 2014 Cx5. I had finished filling it up and placed the gas nozzle back on the pump. I then went to place the gas cap back on when gas splashed up out of tank onto my hand. I've never seen this happen before on any car I've owned. It was a few seconds from the time I hung up the nozzle to turning back around to place the cap back on.
Anyone else ever experience something like this?

I have never had that happen. My guess would be that you had an air bubble that worked its way to the top at that moment.

Did you double click to overfill the tank? If the fuel level is above the the gas vent line, then you came get the trapped air in the charcoal fume trap system.

It's good practice to stop filling when the nozzle shuts off the first time.

I never "top off" my CX-5 and have no trouble getting 450-500+ miles per tank. Most it's ever taken to fill it this way is under 14 gallons (stated capacity is 15.3 gallons).

Let us know if your car keeps doing that. Not normal.

I don't have a habit of topping off, but never heard of a car doing that when you top off, though.

^ Agreed, never had it happen, I never top off tank.

I doubt it had anything to do with overfilling and probably air like others said. I was reading the cleanmpg test and they were able to put over 3 gallons of "top off" before fuel actually pooled into the gas port.

That wouldn't have been in a CX-5, I'm quite certain. Not that I've ever tried it but, based on how much I've put in before the fuel pump shuts off, I am quite confident that you couldn't squeeze much more than an extra gallon in there if you were so foolish as to try. Other cars may have fuel fillers designed such that they cause the pump to click off far before they are full.

I found that near the bottom of the write up here (cleanmpg) Granted, I have not tested it myself but I was just pointing out the unlikely event that it was actually filled up to that point.

No I didn't top it off, I never do. It was a weird thing to happen. Something else I noticed was that there is no little spring loaded flap that stays close except when you push it open with the gas nozzle. This is my third or forth fill-up and I never paid it any attention before.
