AT light....cant stay over 70 MPH

I have a 2003 Protege5 with about 106xxx miles, the car drives and shifts through all the gears just fine, but when I get to about 71 MPH the AT light starts flashing, (i can go over this speed and have, but weather I speed up, slow down, or stay the same speed, the result is the same) after about 30 seconds to 1 min of flashing the car shifts to neutral,(obviously I let off the gas to avoid over revving) then right back into gear (the correct one depending on my speed). I have heard this might be a speed sensor issue but I'm not sure. What could it be and what do I need to do??? Help?!? If you have more questions I might be able to answer them.

To be honest I'm not sure, I just bought the car a couple months ago.

i would start by checking the fluid level and condition.

mine would do this... so i changed the overspeed sensor and then changed the trans fluid and its been fine ever since

Is that the same as the speed sensor? The one on the front of the trans, under the air filter? and where did you get the part, was it an easy swap?

u can get one on ebay and it was pretty straight forward.
