That logic is about as smart as arguing against buying a audi R8 because you have a mazda3 and you should learn to drive better. While photography skills matter the most, having better hardware even for novice photographers will still lead to better photos via hardware.
His layouts and creativity in his shots were justifying of him making the jump. The greatest photographer in the world with his fujifilm point in shoot wont be able to take out the low light grain that's produced by a smaller image sensor. DSLR's arent thousands of dollars anymore, I picked up mine for 250 on craigslist with 2 lenses (my wife's nikon is another story).

It is true that a bigger sensor will be better for photos. There is no denying that. That will NOT make you a better photographer, though.
If you buy a DSLR and just shoot in auto all day it won't be any better than having a point & shoot.
Sure you can have an r8 but a better driver in a lower tier car will still win if you don't have the ability to drive it.
Too many damn people think they can just buy DSLRs and are better photographers when they don't even know how to use it.

what makes those altspace photos pop is photoshop. They are good shots to start with as far as composition etc, but the halo effects+post processing are whats making it look much better. I 100% agree that bad composition and not knowing what youre doing isnt going to do you any favors by blowing $$ on a dslr.
funny story on the valance xmazdax...after it was on I was like...ok the tip is waaay too small now..need to fix now... So I went to advance auto parts and looked at the tips...I make fun if the biggest tip there and call it a fart can...found a smaller one and I was like this one looks great and ask the guy if i can see what it looks like on the car real quick...take it out to the parking lot..too small...go get the next size up...same thing again....and again...turns out the big fart can one i was making fun of was the one that looked right lol....27 bucks later.
