Equipped with the available 3.73 rear axle ($395), our 5.0 needed just 4.3 seconds to hit 60 and only 12.8 at 110.8 mph to knockout the quarter mile. To answer the million-dollar question: Yes, it's quicker than both the 426-horsepower Chevy Camaro SS (4.5, 12.9 at 110.7) and the 425-horse Dodge Challenger SRT-8 (4.6, 13.1 at 108.4). It's also not that far behind the 540-horse supercharged 2010 Shelby GT500, which requires 4.1 and 12.4 at 116.0. In the league of naturally aspirated muscle cars, the new Mustang GT is in a league of its own.

all this for ~30k, bye bye 370z

Thats probably going to be my next car. Time to hide the credit card from myself so I can save!

The Coyote engine in the new 2011 Mustang GT seems amazing on paper. Lets hope it doesnt change in production. I have a 2007 Roush 427R Mustang that has cast internals with a Roots type supercharger that puts out 427 flywheel horsepower. The 0-60 time is 4.5 seconds and quarter mile time is in the high 12s. I paid $45K for this car new and feel threatened by this new engine. I will either rebuild my engine wih forged internals and install the new Roots TVS supercharger to reach for 500-550 flywheel horsepower, (about $15K cost) OR sell my Roush and buy the new Mustang. More than likely the latter.
As the owner of an MS3 I can tell you that this is the car I prefer for my daily driver. Its lighter, gets better mileage and I just love the lift off feel when I get on the boost. The overall maintenance has been cheaper than the Stang and I have less speeding tickets, no doubt thanks to the stealth Sunlight Silver color of my MS3. The Mustang is a beast to drive compared to the overall balance of my MS3 and I paid $20K less for it too! (drinks)

yea i am actually considering a mustang as my next car.
i've always liked them, just the quality issue kinda bugs me (how long it will last)
but if you take care of it, it should last as long as any other car hopefully lol

impressive, but the numbers for the three cars mentioned make it a drivers race on any given day.... i enjoy seeing the horsepower wars and muscle cars making a big comeback.... i mean, a 425hp camaro, challenger or 'stang?!?! what's not to like about that?

i don't really care for the direction they took on the mustang's new body, however. it just doesn't look as tough as the first versions of this generation... too many chromish accents..... granted with proper stance and wheels, it would look a lot better......

Even though I've never actually owned one, I've always been and always will be a mustang guy. If I could afford one I would get it, although I do agree with the above post about the new looks. They should have kept it more like the original new generation, much badder looking. What's awesome is that although the mustang has outlived all the other competition, they've always gotten left in the dust for the most part in terms of power. I personally never thought I'd see a regular GT mustang go over the 400hp mark, let alone have a 6-spd. Grats to Ford

Me likeee

I think the 2010+ body update makes the car look much better than the 2005-2009 version and that Coyote engine is very nice. I want one, but will not be giving up my MS3 or my 03 Cobra to do it. Most of the GM LS1/LS2/LS3 guys are claiming that this test was a ringer and that the car will not perform this well in production. I look forward to watching them eat those words.

Time for a bigger garage.

Yeah. This should be good. I'm not a fan of muscle cars, but this does catch my attention. Even the new V6 is supposed to be great. 3.7l/305 hp, 280ft/lb of tq. I would of course get the GT. Honestly though, I'm a European car guy, so realistically, I would get a used Audi or BMW.

92 Couper - About your avatar ... I just watched that movie. Awful movie but great to see all those stars. Plus, Dom Deluise is awesome!

Like the new nose, not crazy about the new tail. Can't wait to drive a 3.7. I'm assuming it'll be a pre-cursor to a Ecoboosted Mustang, but killing the V8 would probably lose them lots of customers. I'd like to see one as an alternative to a GT...maybe a GTA / GTB / GTC?

lol, that sounded sorta snobbish. That V6 Mustang would spank our lightly modded MS3's.

I guess, of course you'd be spending $35k then.

until you have to take a corner.

I think the '11 5.0 is going to surprise you. Motor Trend got around their figure 8 test in the 5.0 in 25.3 seconds, just 0.4 seconds slower than their 2009 370Z review. The 5.0 also has a very respectable 0.94G result in the skid pad, but again that's bested by the 370Z at 0.99G. Considering the power difference between the two, I've very interested in how these match up on the non-straight tracks.

If there are any live rear axle concerns, I believe the Mustangs in ALMS kick ass with a solid rear.

Not sure how you figure, they are projected to produce nearly identical 0-60 times, if not slightly higher than a stock MS3. The have the same torque, slightly higher HP but are 300lbs heavier, it's going to be a drivers race with an edge going to the MS3 at elevations above sea level.

Motor Trend got the V6 Mustang to 60 in 5.1 seconds and to a 1/4 mile in 13.7. I don't think any mag has approached those numbers in either generation of the MS3. With the performance package ($1,995, totaling about $25k), the V6 Mustang put up 0.96G and 60-0 in 104 ft. I'd say it is decidedly a better performer than the MS3. Oh yeah, it takes regular gas, too.

I would have to dis-agree sir....... what do you mean by lightly modded?

2011 v6 Mustang- curb weight 3459lb bhp 305 prabaly 270 whp

MS3- curb weight 3150 bhp 260 *230ish whp*

Stock vs stock I would say edge to the Mustang. *close race*

lightly modded to me is few bolt ons..so intake-testpipe-intercooler,forget Turboback or a manifold or a good tune LOL.

MS3 lightly modded- 265-270 whp...and still 300+ lb lighter. Gotta to with the MS3 there man :)

BUT!! I love this new Mustang..nice car..v6 will have plenty of potential and be a sleeper for sure..5.0 V8 has forged internals, hopefully will be a good engine for boost, and then your looking at serious power!....I dont mind the changes that the 2010+ models, except the front..yuck!...the 05-09 front with the wider grill and non-sloped down hood of the 2010+ was way more aggressive looking imo...but we are all different. Still cant wait to see the production model :)

I dont really understand...? But, I have to say, that V6 is impressive, however, most V6 N/A motors that have come from ford are rather gutless. This hopefully will be a change. But yes, I stand by my guns. If I was to purchase one, I would much rather have the 5.0.

Already driven one. It's faster. We'll leave it at that..
