so i bought 3 bottles of redline 75w-90 gear oil today for my 08.5 ms3...but i didnt notice that it was GL-5 tranny oil while the spec that's recommended in the manual is GL-4...after i got it changed, i felt that shifting is smoother but its getting more stiffer to move the shifter and get into gears... i did some research and found out that GL-5 oil is for heavy duty use...so i dont know if its needed to change the oil to GL-4...

no ur fine using that, normally the rule is, its ok to do over kill but not ok to under kill (if thats a phrase lol)

u can use heavy duty for light duty but not light duty for heavy duty

thx for the help...im glad that people understood me while english is not my official language....

Which Redline did you get? Most folks use the MT-90, which is a GL-4 spec oil. Some GL-5 oils have additives that can eat the bronze syncros and other parts over time. Not sure if this is an issue with the Redline GL-5.

Yup, no idea whether this is OK for our transmissions. I'd be inclined to send them an email and ask. Not sure if anyone else is able to chime in.

Transaxles are not like transmissions. They are built to take gear oil, iow, they have large fluid passages and no bronze or fibre parts anywhere

Are you saying that there are no transaxles in existence with bronze syncros?
Why is that exactly?

Can't guarantee that but, bronze synchros and heavy gear oil don't go together. Transaxles particularly in RD apps, are designed from the get-go as that and the lubrication passages are sized for the slow moving thicker fluid. This stuff is also too heavy to flow well through the smaller lubrication passages in a transmission. The heavy oil is for iron and steel parts, experiencing MASSIVE crushing and shear forces, like an OTR truck rear end.

Honest to fyck, why all manufacturers don't build trans for cars that take ATF, I don't know. It's cheap, massively shear resistant, flows well at low temps, what's the problem?

Money he finds shifting heavy and stiff now. This is a bad sign.

only drive that GL-5 oil for less than 30 MILES..just get it changed to ford xt m5 qs today... shifting is lighter and smoother right now...

No worries then, it'd take a long time to wear anything out. Bloody expensive that Ford fluid, wasn't it, hehe....

I have Redline MT-90 with a shot of Ford friction modifier, to quiet the LSD.

yea...comparing to mt 90...twiced the price....i bought it in a ford dealer..so i saved the shipping..i just found out that i need to buy 4 quarter everytime...3 is not safe...4th one is alway's needed..

BTW...i spent 160 on this freaking oil change....(protest)(protest)

That ford fluid is not expensive. I got 3 quarts for $50 bucks. For something that you change that infrequently, who cares.

I have heard bad things about Friction modifiers from guys here on the forum, but Mazda just put some in my car to quiet the "WAH WAH WAH" noise the LSD makes during cold start and tight turns. They said they called Mazda NA and that's what was suggested - so i no longer am worried about the friction modifier.

My WAH WAH WAH noise only went down VERY slightly when going from MT90 to the ford stuff. I don't understand how some people say that it completely eliminated it.

Hey, my car is making that sound now (MT-90 with no modifier). If I just leave it, is there any danger of hurting the transmission, or is it just one of those 'annoying sound, but causes no damage' issues, like the cowl creak ;)
