graduated highschool (questions for military people)

Another new AFI is no more blousing straps going in affect jan.

Honestly, that ^ one is just plain stupid. Do they realize how uncomfortable its going to be to have your pants tucked into your boots? Not to mention how stupid it looks.

All of the DOD runs off of the same financial manual: DFAS so its pretty much all the same.

I know its all governed by DFAS, but I wasn't sure about the meal card thing.

yeah I'm not worried about the gf part they come and go. but i think i'd rather get on that $260 for food immediatly vs the meal plan. And i'm in shape i played lacrosse althrough hs and am always at the gym.

So I also met with the Navy recruiters today and I was impressed, but at the same time not really. Parts were really simillar to the Air Force and really different at the same time. However, from the sound of things I'm leaning a little more towards the Air Force. So far I've met with most of the different branches of the military. And the Air Force "Seems" like they're telling me the truth for the most part since i did think some of what i was told was bs. However, I'm going to meet with the Marines and Army recruiters one more time bc I have information now that I didn't have then, thanks to you guys.

Nothing against the Marines or Army as plenty of my relatives have served in both, and one still in; but they both deploy a LOT. So if you join either one, you can pretty much count on spending at least one, if not several, tours in the middle east.

IMO, its not worth trying. You can get in BIG trouble if they decide to make an example out of you; which the Air Force seems to be doing more and more these days.
Better be in shape too.....PT testing just changed. You'll be tested every 6 months now, and the standards went way up. It'll be effective in Jan if I was informed correctly.

I was PT tested twice a year in the AF... I thought thats how it was supposed to be... you learn something new everyday I guess.

Well you said you were Security Forces right? I know they tend to hold you guys to higher standards. Even right now, we're still only tested (officially) once a year unless you fail. If you fail, then you test again within either 30 or 60 days. Can't remember.

yeah but at least with the marines there deployments are 8 months versus the 12 to 15 months that the army does... but then again if you put in for deployments in the AF you'll probably get them, I can only speak for Security Forces, but there were alot of deployments popping up. I did a 365 in the middle east, 8 months in south america and another 6 months in the pacific.

lol yeah the standards were pretty high, I can still ramble off a post briefing like it's nothing and I've been out for a while ask me about any weapons system and I can tell you rate of fire, caliber, it's ranges, and nomenclature.

Yeah, and truthfully, you guys are the only ones that deploy THAT much. I'm pretty sure Security Forces are the only exemption, but the AEF cycle is 1 deployment every 18 months. But by the time I'm done here, I will have gone almost 7 yrs without going overseas.

I was in the same boat as you back in 1994. Talked to the Army guy, he was an idiot (coincidence I'm sure but as the Army rep he caused me to walk away), talked to the Marines - very cool, very gung ho, hoorah etc. Skipped the Navy as I don't want to be on a ship. Talked to the AF and the guy was laid back, and straight with me from the get go. I think I would have enjoyed the Marines, but I'm glad I went with the AF.

Like others have said, pick a job you want from the job book, then get it guaranteed. There is no reason to leave it to chance - you will get a crappy job otherwise, because they have high turnover rate and need to fill the slots, and you'll have to console yourself with "everybody has an important job to the overall mission" - BS you'll be miserable and will get out as soon as you can. If your ASVAB is high enough you can get any job you want. I only got an 87 but it was good enough for any job. You might have to wait for a job opening. Some jobs require additional testing to qualify for, that can be a bit tougher. Originally I went in as a computer programmer (there was a second test for that, barely passed it) but I f'd up in training so got put in a different AFSC. I'm still bitter about that but it was my own damn fault.

When you get to Basic you will be stressed out...just shake it off like water on a ducks back, in the end it is just bs to rattle your cage a bit. Only 6 weeks. You'll get yelled at, so what. It's annoying, all the extreme (impossible) details expected...that is the point, to get you in the mindset of following extremely detailed instruction. Do your best, be confident. They aren't trying to break you down mentally/physically like they do in the other boot camps. Just trying to prepare a bunch of kids fresh from mama's teat for serious jobs with serious equipment. In retrospect I'm surprised at how effectively the AF get's 18 year olds to do the job.

Are you guys really talking about fitness in the AF? Man it was a joke when I was in. Just don't get fat and you'll be fine.

Yeah, it is. They extended "warrior week". haha. Hey, you can laugh at PT all you want, but now that the bars are being raised exponentially, you're going to see a ton of people dropping like flies. Personally, I'm in great shape, but in my opinion, its crazy. How many jobs in the AF actually require you to be in shape?? Very few.

But back to the topic.....[end threadjack] haha

I always wondered how people struggled with PT tests... I never understood how over a year some could gain so much weight... but that remins me of a funny ass story of our supplies supe SMSGT dont remember his last name but he loved to jump your ass over any little thing... if one button on your cargo pocket was undun in the squardon, which most of the SF guys did due to the beret. but any ways, everytime he had a PT eval he would have his wife smear bengay all over his waist and tightly serane wrap it lol apperently it made him lose a couple inches to his waist...

wtf lol thats possibly one of the wierdest slash funniest things I've ever heard.

Its saran wrap and preparation H to lose those inches. It contracts water wait from your stomach.

And I dont know the shape you are in, but the graduating standards for basic are as follows:

Pushups- 45 in one min
Situps- 50 in one min
1 1/2 Mile run- 11:57

How is running 11:57 in 1.5mi even possible in basic...almost every AF person I have seen over my 2 tours in Iraq and Afghanistan has been overweight...so I'm not sure how the AF standards are so high when 70% of their personel are overweight.

To the kid that made this thread.

Your best bet is to look at AF or Navy, I agree with most the guys in here on that. I'm in the Army and I can tell whoever it was that said Army deploys a lot you are wrong. I had over a year and a half off inbetween my deployments. I just came home from Afghanistan in March 09 and we are not due to deploy again until Spring 2011. I get plenty of down time and we do a lot of stupid s*** but its nothing huge just moving things from containers and fixing trucks, but I'm a mechanic...thats what we do. If you are just wanting the military to go to school, go do Army Reserves. Its your best bet with the least commitment and you still get school benefits. You get the GI Bill and only have to work 1 weekend a month and you won't do anything during that weekend because its 2 days all you will do is more than likely do a PT test (physical fitness) and then chill the rest of the day or do some bulls*** training that is pointless.

If all you want to do is go to college why not apply for Pell Grants or Scholarships? Why even worry about joining the military? My wife is going to school for Registered Nurse she is in her Junior year and not paid a dime to go to school. All I'm saying is if your main goal is going to college, research that before you go to a recruiter looking for help when you haven't done your homework with the college thing. Recruiters will lie and do whatever they have to to make the miltiary sound appealing to you so you'll sign up. I know because thats how I got in the Army, that and the AF told me I couldn't join them because I had bad credit...wtf thats all about I don't know. And the Navy told me I couldn't pick my job that it was luck of the draw...Eff that.

If you want to message me off of this thread for any more help please feel free, the military is a good job if you are looking for a very nice stepping stone to other jobs, but its not for everyone. I'm getting out in 6mos, I've been in for almost 4yrs now and realized its not for me. And you can make a ton of money outside the military through KBR or other organizations that are government contractors.

Good Luck and hope this helps you some.
