graduated highschool (questions for military people)

Its definitely all in what you make it, combined with what you like. I grew up in a small town, so I enjoy that small town atmosphere. Hell I TRIED to get Minot and ended up at Eglin on the FL panhandle. But I've been rather fortunate as I've gotten every base I put in for. So its not hard to get what you want.

I come from a small town too, but Minot was somthing else, I made ALOT of friends with the civilians, and if it wasnt for Minot I never would have found the MSP, but I was in the state for the winter months... and I dont like wakeing up to 20" of fresh snow. but it really wasnt a bad station, theres alot to o if your an outdoors type. and up ther all of the water is blue... I was amazed, that was the first time I have ever seen blue lake water.

Did you guys get to bring your cars with you? Or are they tucked away at home?

they actually paid me to move up to ND and back... I think it's called like a ditty move or somethin like that. they gave me 1100 and i only spent 400 moving back...

That sounds good to me. Did you have a house or an appartment or something? cause most of my friends that are in i think live in baracks or something bout this girl i know has her own place in tx with the national guard

well Idk about the rest of the services, but you have an option depending on your squardron in the AF, and they will pay you BAH (Base alotment for Houseing) if you live off base, in ND it was around 600 dollars extra a month.

To be completly honest I don't know yet if I'm going to make this a career or just to help me get through school, but the way I see it. If I enjoy my time spent in the military and the benefits are there and money and housing and everything why not make it a career. The way I see it I'm either going to hate it or love it but either way its something I know can help me with my future and thats what I need the most.

Yes you can bring your car with you. The military will pay to ship 1 vehicle. Any more than that and its out of your own pocket. But the good thing is, if you don't have a lot of household goods you can do what GIJoe was referring to which is a Do It Yourself move. Basically you get paid to do the move yourself. The government will pay you a certain dollar amount per day, and another dollar amount per mile that you drive. This is your best bet if you don't have much to move because you weigh your car empty, then full, and the government pays you 80% (I think...might be off a few %) of what it would have cost them to move you themselves (which is normally a pretty good amount).
As far as housing goes, you will have to live in the barracks/dorms until you hit the rank of E-4, get married, or the occupancy of your dorm reaches a certain percentage (which never happens). So basically, the first couple of years you will live in a dorm unless you get married. But the good thing is that its rent free. So only bills you pay are the ones you create (phone, cable, internet, etc).

I'm full of useless information! Haha

thats how ours was (refureing to the off base living) and as soon as your dorm reached that percentage ALOT of people rushed to the first shirts office. so it's not allways garunteed and IMO it's cheaper to live on base unless you find a CHEAP apt.

seriously? thats nuts. So you basically live for free minus the bills you make like you said. Well guess the gf is getting cut loose.

yeah. and food on base is increadably cheap, if I spent 50 bucks in food a week I would freak and wonder how.

Thats another choice you'll have. The military will give you two choices regarding food:
1) take a meal card which will get you 3 free meals per day
2) military will give you $260/mo to feed yourself

But the meal card is only available to dorm residents. So once you move out of the dorms, you go straight to getting money for food.

well when I first got to Minot we were on the meal card, then a few months later we got BAS (base alotment for supplement... I think) but I thought it was based on rank.

Yup. And the gf can't live with you in the dorms.

and yeah she cant "live there" but I know several people (myself included) have there GF stay in the dorms for quite a while... just dont get caught... and if you do, hope the guy that catches you doesnt matter, or is cool.

You might be right. I've never been on the meal card, but I'm pretty sure you have a choice while you're in the dorm. If anything, I think the meal card applies until you reach E-4.

Also, this what the Air Force does. I can't speak for any other branches, so I don't know if they offer the same thing.

IMO, its not worth trying. You can get in BIG trouble if they decide to make an example out of you; which the Air Force seems to be doing more and more these days.
Better be in shape too.....PT testing just changed. You'll be tested every 6 months now, and the standards went way up. It'll be effective in Jan if I was informed correctly.

Your right..they will be testing now 2 times a year. But lets be honest, the pt is not that hard. The Run consists of 60% of the pt points, waste measurment is now 20%, and pushups and situps are 10% each. Min score of 75% to pass.

Another new AFI is no more blousing straps going in affect jan, and now we can walk and talk on cell phones.

All I keep hearing from NCO's and SNCO's is that we are getting alot more strict compared to how it used to be just a few years ago. Doesn't seem that bad to me, just do what you have to do and you will be fine.

Even if you live off base and have to pay cash for a meal, they are extremely cheap.
