EGR Discussion

it was when i got home that night as was acting up again the next morning i was on the way to my shop to hook my egr back up and it started running good again

LOL, I'm confused. So it fixed itself or it got better when you put the EGR tube back on?

DTC P0401 EGR flow insufficient detected

DETECTION
CONDITION
• Difference in intake manifold pressures when EGR is operated and when it is stopped is too small.
Diagnostic support note
• This is an intermittent monitor (EGR).
• MIL illuminates if PCM detects the above malfunction conditions in two consecutive drive cycles.
• DIAGNOSTIC MONITORING TEST RESULTS and PENDING CODE is available if PCM detects the
above malfunction condition during first drive cycle.
• FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• DTC is stored in PCM memory.

POSSIBLE
CAUSE
• EGR valve malfunction
• EGR boost sensor malfunction
• EGR boost sensor solenoid valve malfunction
• EGR gasket malfunction
• PCM malfunction

DTC P0402 EGR flow excessive detected

DETECTION
CONDITION
• Difference in intake manifold pressures when EGR is operated and when it is stopped is too large.
Diagnostic support note
• This is an intermittent monitor (EGR).
• MIL illuminates if PCM detects the above malfunction conditions in two consecutive drive cycles.
• PENDING CODE is available if PCM detects the above malfunction condition during first drive cycle.
• FREEZE FRAME DATA is available.
• DTC is stored in PCM memory.

POSSIBLE
CAUSE
• EGR valve gasket is not installed.
• EGR valve gasket has been damaged.
• PCM malfunction

anyone hook up the EGR to the intake after the MAF? there might be enough pressure difference for it to work. or somehow using a relay with a resistor to the boost sensor to modify the signal whenever the EGR operates. that might work.

I'm running an EGR (connected, but no flow) to a 626 IM and throwing a CEL.
We think that the EGR may need to see flow and temp also.
Does anyone know where to find the right resistor to fool it?

Not sure why but I have the 626 manifold with the egr on it but blocked off, not plugged in electrically and I do not throw a CEL. The car hated idle, but then I just threw a little more fuel at it during idle with my AFC V3 and it idles like a champ. Better than it ever did stock :D Not sure about the no CEL though. The boost sensor is the one next to the strut tower on the passenger side right? and the other is MAP? Which one is which?

It's wierd that everyone gets a CEL and I dont. It's not even plugged in lol.

Ugh, this has been discussed many times. Unless your manifold doesn't have a provision for an EGR tube there is no reason to block off your EGR. There is no performance gain.

yes, the egr is only open under light load part throttle, not idl or heavy load and full throttle. only performance gain you could get would be to clean your egr if it's dirty and doesn't close completely.

i put a breather filter on my EGR and still no codes. every now and then at part throttle my AFR's will jump around when the egr opens and closes but it's nothin serious.

i know, but i already cleaned out the egr a couple of times and it seems to keep coming back

if you're EGR is blocked or the pipe plugged, you will get a DTC and the MIL will illuminate. if it's left open with a breather filter you will not get a DTC. there is a sensor that detects the pressure change in the intake manifold when the EGR opens and closes, if that change is not big enough (EGR blocked) you will get the DTC.

the egr only opens when crusing and when the ect gets too hot to recirculate oxides of nitrogen(NOx) back in the cylinder to keep it cool if the ect gets to 2500 degrees or higher, egr vavles do not normal need to be cleaned or replaced. its an emissons control device so if there is any malfunction with any device every manufac. has a 8 year 80,000 warrnty on emission devices. only if they havent been tampered with.

mazda protege egrs have been known to clog so a cleaning can't hurt.

so i have a 2003 mp5
i just finished my turbo set up
i blocked off my egr and i have no problems and i'm not throwing a cell
everything works fine
