In most of FL, it's 87/89/93, with usually a 10-15 cent difference between grades, depending on the retailer. When 87 was selling for $3.25 a gallon, it was not unusual to see 30 cents total difference between 87 & 93. Now that prices are falling again, most stations are reverting to 10 cents between grades.
I am not loyal to any one brand of gas. Gas stations here are too hit & miss. I prefer Shell or Chevron if I can find them, but I always buy 93 octane, wherever I get it. I also like to add a bottle of Techron to my gas about once every 15-20k miles to help clean out the fuel system. The only brands I will not buy are Citgo and off-brands, like RaceTrack, etc. because you can't be sure what sort of detergent additives they are or aren't using.
The problem here in FL is that we are stuck with 10% Ethanol blend. Yes, Ethanol should produce slightly more horsepower (we're talking single digits, don't get excited), but I object to the governor's ethanol mandate for several reasons.
First, it should be my farking choice to buy ethanol. But Governor Charlie decided that by 2010, all gasoline sold in FL MUST be 10% ethanol. I didn't drink the ethanol kool-aid, and I don't want it forced down my throat.
Second, most vehicles are still not flex fuel vehicles. Which means that their fuel systems are made of the wrong materials for ethanol. Sure, the government tells you that 10% ethanol is fine for your car. But if 85% ethanol will rot/melt my fuel system from the inside out, I don't want ANY ethanol in my car.
And finally, ethanol produces poorer mileage. Gas prices here in FL didn't drop when 90% of the retailers decided to comply with Governor Charlie's mandate ahead of schedule, so what good was ethanol doing me? NONE! In fact, I was LOSING money, because that gallon of gas was no longer taking me as far as it used to.
Veering off on another tangent.. I have heard from friends in 3 other states, mostly in the Midwest, that regular is below $2.00 there, as low as $1.65. Regular 87 octane in Tampa is about $2.30 right now, and I am paying $2.54 for premium.
