Rim change

Currently have 18's and looking to switch to 17's. What's the correct tire size? I'm sure this has been asked before. Thanks in advance for the help!

Depends on the width of the wheels. Basically you want the tire to have the same circumference as the OEM tire so that your speedo is not thrown off (which equates to worse gas mileage).

I am running 17 x 7 MSP Racing Harts. The tire size with a circumference closest to stock is 215/40/17.

So that's the recommended size for 17's?

If the wheels you are getting are 17x7, then yes. What size wheels are you getting/do you have?

Yeah, wheel size will def. help us help you. In addition to the width of the wheels, be sure to find out the offset as that can affect what size tire you may run.

I know of a few members who are running the MSP wheels with a 215/45/17 (may rub under full load) but they have a +55 offset.

I have MSP wheels too. The 45 series tires will throw your speedo off by almost 3 mph (giving you worse gas mileage), while the 40 series (which I have) will only be 0.2 mph off.

Noted, I was just throwing that size out there as some people like to have a little extra sidewall which might be her case since she is downsizing from a 215/35/18.

Of course width and offset will play a factor into running that size. More than likely she will need to run the 215/40 or 205/40.

Very true. There are always trade-offs.

Hmmm

My 18's are running with 225/40/18. Too big? The 17's I am getting are from the Mazda3 5 prong ones. My car is not lowered or anything. Can I run 45's on the 17's? Or just 205 0r 215/40?(braindead

No idea what offset means or how to figure it out...(thought)

Yeah 40 series are a bit too big for 18's.

For those mazda3 wheels, I would go with the 215/40's for the widest tire and closest circumference to stock P5 tires.

225/40 eh? I have seen 215/40/18 before but not 225....my guess is too big. What model year Mazda3 wheels are you getting? I know the 5 star wheels are 17x6.5 with a 52.5 offset. Liquid_ag is running a 215/45 on those same wheels....I am not sure what the width/offset of the newer snowflake wheels are.

One issue I can see with the 215/45 is that the tire might be too wide for the wheel so you would have to make sure that the installer is careful mounting them so he/she doesn't damage them. Again Liquid_ag has been running them for about a year with no issues, so....

Bala is running a 40 series but not 225 wide. IIRC he did roll the fenders.

The 215/40 will def put you closer to stock specs which will mean that your mileage will hardly be affected as well as your speedometer.
