I'm planning on changing my oil myself for the 1st time. took to a shop last time ! The filter is a cartride type right ? And where is it ? . Cant seem to locate it i was assuming it would be up top ? I havent actually looked underneath yet!

Also does the filter require a special Tool ?

Is it a special filter for the MS6 or is it the same as a reg 2.3 mazda6 ?

Thanks

It's underneath. Remove the plastic engine tray and you'll see a black cap with a hex bolt in the middle of it.

You'll need a 76mm, 14 flute cap-style wrench, used with a socket wrench. No need to remove the hex bolt....if you just leave it alone, it's one less rubber o-ring to worry about. Treat it just like a traditional filter, but be careful not to strip or crossthread the canister, and do not over-torque when replacing.

I recommend genuine Mazda filters...cartridge type. I believe it's the same one that fits a 6i.

I would have someone who knows what they are doing before doing this car for your first oil change...

Thanks

and remember with the oil filter change in takes 6 qtz.

Thanks for all that answered ! I got all the goods today including a filter wrench I got it figured out just sorta wanted to know the details before getting under the car. Thanks for the concern killer ...but this not my 1st oil change.... just on this car. Trust me I'll be careful this car is like my girlfriend ATM LOL

If you happen to be lucky enough to own a torque wrench, the torque specs in N*m's are written right on the plastic cap.

It might be over kill, but getting a torque wrench would be a great investment.

Incase you do worry about stripping or cracking it, buy a replacement from Mazda as a spare. I did when I stripped that stupid hex bolt. It was like $10 for the whole plastic piece, hex bolt included.
