MS3 with 17x8

Is there anyone out there running 17x8? If so, what offset are you running? I am thinking about buying 5zigen Fn01r-c 17x8 with a 43mm offset and i was just wondering how much work, if any, it was to make your 17x8's work. Thanks.

There are quite a few running 17x8, but I don't think that offset will work. I haven't tried them personally but most people running an 8 inch rim have a 48 offset with 45 being the lowest (that I've seen used). When I get rims, I'm going to be looking for either a 17x7.5 in a 45 or 48 offset or a 17x8 in a 48. According to the offset calculator I used, the 7.5 +45 provides a few more mm's of clearance between the tire and fender than the 8 +48. A 7.5 +48 would provide even more clearance if you were going to lower your car.

You'll probably have to roll fenders to get the +43's to work and be careful about tire width. Either way, if you decide to go ahead with the +43, let us know how it works out.

I'm using 17x8s with a 45mm offset (235/45 tires). They barely fit (they seem very close to the fenders) but I don't think they're rubbing.

The biggest I've seen are some 18x8.5 with a 53mm offset! They were crazy close to the struts but the owner said they were working fine.

18x8.5?! Now that is what i am talking about! What size tires was he running?

KaiserSoze and Hirudin, Thanks for the info. I dont mind "massaging" the fenders, but i would like to run the widest tire/wheel setup i can.

Definitely won't work if you're looking for the widest wheels/tires. Look for at the very least +48. There are a few that are +50 or higher, but I've had a hard time finding +50 in a rim that I like and is affordable for me.

18/8.5 53mm. The widest that will fit with proper factory offset.

NICE!!! That is bad ass! Thanks for the pics man! that is awesome. How much room did that leave to outside in the front and back?

Also, are you running stock suspension? And how much do you think that you could lower now?

I am looking to run either the Tein SS coilovers or the KW variant2 coilovers... both have pretty high spring rates, but i would still be worried about destroying the fenders without rolling them.

Thanks

It is stock till the snow melts; I have a set of tein ss coilovers waiting to go on. The front looks like it will be fine, however the rear may need A role to clear, it will be close. The pic I took show rear fender clearance did not work very well. I'll post it anyway.
If it does rub I might just have another excuse to dial in even more redicoulous amounts of negative camber(shady).
High spring rates are good; I believe in high spring rates and stock sway bars. I would not mind if my teins were even stiffer, they should still work quite well. They were awsome on my reguler 3. One thing I might do is drill new holes in my rear rear factory bar to stiffen it up a bit and hopefully dial out understeer. As for drop, I will probably drop the back around .75" to 1", the front about 1" to 1.5". Overlowering will only make it handle worse, it throws geometry all out whack.
I will post pics/results when I put them on this spring.

Lastly what is the spring rate for the kw setup
Teins are 340 390

Are those Weddsports???!!! I want them!

I didn't think I could find any that would fit on this beastie!

Looks frikkin good man. Props.

The KW variant2's are 400 front/ Progressive in the back.

Again, thanks for the pics! I dont mind rolling the fenders, so i am thinking that it is 18x8.5's with 245/45's...

That would be unprecidented. Dude is only running 235s for now.

Hey man don't show me up with 245's. :)
Kidding aside your best bet is a 40 intstead of 45's; this will keep your O.D. closer to what it should be.

I like the sound of that 400 spring rate, along as the backs are stiffer than 400. On these cars stiffer rear vs front springs helps reduce understeer.

Your really makin me wish I had gone 245 in the first place.

well, i'm thinking that if jp4130 is running 235 without rolling his fenders at all and there is a sliver of space...i might be able to roll the fender, get a lesser offset, coilovers, and maybe, just maybe, i could fit a 2t45... but i guess at that point i would just be doing it just to say i did it.

i guess that running a 235 on a 18x8.5 will do...

I think that there is a bit more grip to be had with a 245. Is it worth it? not sure yet, I guess I will find out on the next set.
If you go with a lesser offset than 53 you will be even closer to the fender, 53 is ideal. Anything lower will probably put 245's to far out.
Also keep in mind that different tires of the same size may have a shape that causes one type of 235 to rub while another brand's 235 doesn't.
My clearences are proven with a 235/40 BS RE01R.

Also what type of rims are planning on Wedsport? ;) (yes)
Or have you found another type of 8.5 rim?
Which brand of coilovers are leaning towards? Does KW say if the rear is stiffer than the front?

Yeah, i know that tires are made differently and i was talking to my room mate the other day (RX8 driver and the guy who got me into cars) and he was saying that in a straight line lighter/wider tires are generally better, but when it comes to handling there is a line where you are no longer getting a good weight distribution to the ground; therefore, less grip... Now 245 vs. 235 probably not a huge difference in grip, but i think that 235's would be fine.

Actually, i hadnt even thought about Wedsports until i saw them on your car, but SEXY is the best word to describe it!! Since then i have gone from Superlagaros or the Rotas on *************** (how do you beat $600 wheels that look great) to those Wedsports... I've got a black MS3 too... Besides, tirerack has them on sale, tax returns are right around the corner, and, most importantly, Forged vs. Cast for about the same money (OZ vs. Wedsport)...

I am definitly leaning toward the KW right now and i would assume that the "progressive" term probably starts it's "progression" somewhere above 400 since the back is typically stiffer than the front. However, i havent seen them for the MS3 specifically, only 04+ and up for the regular 3 on vividracing.com... which i hear sketchy things about. Furthermore, generally speaking one can always talk to KW and see if they would make or currently make a stiffer set up for that coilover. When the time comes i will either buy the KWs as a first choice or the Teins as a second. I think either way i will have a good set up with stiffer spring rates and better dampening.

I dont know right now though, at the moment i just really want to get the exhaust manifold from the group buy and install that...then we'll see what happens with the suspension, wheels, and tires
