How To: Rewire Fogs For Always On

hardness and wire photos

Just did the mod, thanks, Mike!
Took some photos that should help those who hasn't done it.

The only thing I did differently was simply cutting the red wire, and use a twist on connector to connect another wire to it, because I didn't have a female spade that is the same size as the factory one. If you wanted to go back you can simply reconnect the red wires.

The first photo shows the relay hardness, with the blue mask taped screwdriver pointing to it. If you put your finger on it and turn the foglight switch on and off you can feel the hardness vibrate a bit.

2nd photo shows the switch hardness with the green/black spade popped out from the hardness.

3rd photo shows the wiring.

Is it illegal to drive with just the fog lights on at night? Would a cop have reason to pull you over? I have seen many people just use their fogs at night and I was just wondering if it's asking for trouble.

Yeah, it's illegal in Oregon, and I would think for most other places as well. It was just for the photo. :D

Here is my favorite mod....well next to my sport shifter!

If I follow the instructions in the first post, does the switch still work to turn the foglights on and off? Can someone confirm this?

What I want:
- Switch to still work
- Fogs on with Parking Lights
- Fogs on with Headlights
- Fogs off with High Beams

I know it's in this thread somewhere but there are so many variations.

You need to run a 12v source to the red wire coming from the relay. This accomplishes making the fog switch independent of the rest of the headlight switch setup.

Follow drew's instructions, post 85 on Page 3: http://www.msprotege.com/vbb230/showpost.php?p=616518&postcount=85

Here I have read through the whole forum and found so many different set ups. I want to know if some can confirm a specific set up.
I want to be able to:
1. use the stock switch
2. only have the fog lights turn on when I turn on my headlights or parking lights
2. have the fog lights stay on when the high beams are on.

Is there a way to do this set up. Also if anyone can tell me if the fog lights on a protege es uses the same harnes as the fog lights on a p5. Thank you

I am going to set my fog lights up exactly as you described - and I know how to do it. If you follow the first post you will get the setup you want except the fogs will turn off with the high beams. To fix this, borrow steps 3 and 4 from drew72ca's writeup (page 6) and connect the red/white wire on the swicth to ground. This will keep the fogs on with the high beams. I am probably going to do it this weekend - I can post here when I confirm that it works (I know it will).

It worked!

Well, I did this mod this weekend and it worked great. As I stated in the previous post I made a few changes to the previous mods to get the functionality that I wanted:

1. Fog light switch still functional
2. Fog lights come on with parking lights
3. Fog lights stay on with high beams

It was actually really easy. For completeness I'll list all the steps that I performed.

1. Remove the panel on the side of the fog light switch. I used a small flat screwdriver to pry the panel out (it just pops off).
2. Locate the fog light relay under the dash by your left foot. As stated before it is easy to find by listening and feeling it while you toggle the fog light switch.
3. Cut the red wire and tape off the end that does not connect to the relay. Make sure you leave enough wire connected to the relay so you can attach your own wire.
4. Attach a wire of your own to the red wire on the relay.
5. Route the wire up to your fog light switch. (tape it to the other wires under the dash so that it is secure and out of the way)
6. Splice this wire to the green/black wire at the fog light switch.
7. If you want your fogs to stay on with your brights, you need to ground the red/white wire at the switch. I did this by cutting the red/white wire and splicing it (the end leading into the switch) to the blue/white wire of the switch. This is the ground for the switch illumination.
8. Tape the red/white wire (the end going to the harness) up so there are no shorts.
9. Re-install the side panel by popping it back on.

All done! This can easily be done in less than a half hour. If you do not want your fogs to stay on with the brights, skip steps 7 and 8. It is technically illegal to have more than 4 lights on at once while on public roads, but since you will dim the brights whenever anyone is close - I don't see how anyone will be able to tell the highs/lows/fogs are all on at the same time.

Finally got off my dead butt and did this mod. Piece of cake w/ the 1st post destructions.

thanks again for the help , nice right up. I just have another question for those who might know this. Is the wiring for the protege sedan fog lights the same as the wiring for the p5,msp 03, and mp3 fog lights. Meaning i want to stick the p5, msp03, or mp3 fog light set up onto my sedan fog light wiring. I want to know if this would work fine. Please help on this. thank you again.

I have performed this mod and I must say that it does look good. However, there is a problem. I have the perimeter alarm on my P5 and when it is armed, the fogs/parking lights stay on until I start the car again!!! Whats going on here?? I followed the instructions to the letter but the car is f*&)ed up.

Update
The lights will not shut off now at all. I have tried disconnecting the battery and trying to let the system reset. However, when the power is reconnected, the horn honks continuously and the car will not start. What to do??

Please post some pic...It would be very helpful...Thanks!!

I want to turn on and off the fog lights with the switch only. I don't want to turn on the parking lights so the fog lights have power to work with. Is there any way to do this?
