Do you legally have to have a 3rd brake light, or is it just manufacturers were required to have one? I may be willing to part with my tan one if not.

Man, that's a good question. I searched the Ca DMV site and found no references .... and Cali regulates everything. I've only found vauge references to it being a Federal requirement since 1986. At any rate it's not worth the trouble: http://forums.officer.com/forums/showthread.php?t=34542
You don't want any excuse to be pulled over out here, after licence and registration, you'll hear "pop the hood" - no CARB sticker on your ebay intake? Aftermarket tubo or exhaust mani. that deletes a cat? - Your Fuxored. It doesn't say it in the article I linked, but I've heard of $600 fines.

That's true. I can argue that the RB exhaust is stock equipment on the MP3 but I'm sure they could find something to b**** about. I had one cop try to tell me my wheels were illegal because they weren't stock so I asked him to show me something in writing stating that. He said he would let me go with a "warning" (silly)

Wow CA is anal about their regulations:

Illegal color of side marker lights. If present, must be yellow in the front and red in the rear (25106, 24003 VC).
Driving with just parking lights on (24800 VC). Vehicles that have factory-installed automatic daytime running lights must meet federal requirements and are legal.
I drive with just my parking lights on every day when I'm going to and from work, when there's enough light to see but I want to make sure other cars see me.

OK, people have come forward that have brown and light grey 3rd brake housings. Did they ever make them in charcoal? I'm starting to think that this interior color option only came with Pros that had wings (I hope I'm wrong - but that's what vinyl dye was made for if so ....).

I think that may be the case. The ES is the only regular protege that comes with charcol interior, BUT it doesn't need the 3rd brake light since it comes stock with a wing. I guess same as MP3/MSP's. Hmm...another bump for you

I saw a Blue 03 lx with charcoal interior (stock), but I don't remember if the 3rd eye was the same color.

The ES one wasn't black? They have the same interior as the P5/MP3/MSP so I figured it would be charcoal/black.

I've been trying to find a ES rear deck package because apparently it was the only model that was made without a hole for the 3rd brake light. I have a grey one that i will trade you for the pannel.

Um .. I have an MSP rear deck. I deleted the wing and added the interior third brake light. I've got an extra filler panel now, but I don't think that's what you are looking for. If I'm reading this wrong, let me know.

Yeah i might just end up doing that for now and wait and see if an es deck turns up later. my parts guy wants way too much for it so i have to wait till i need some other crap from him and get a deal on it. let me know how much it would cost to get it to 30002.

I popped the filler panel off to send out to neoturner, and wouldn't ya know ... there's an unused wiring harness ready to plug into the 3rd brake light. I thought I was going to have to relocate the wiring from the trunk ... honest ten minute install. Not really sekzy, but I'm legal.

Though it may exist, I have yet to find evidence that an interior 3rd light was manufactured in the "charcoal" color of the MSP package tray. If you get your hands on a light gray or tan one - this stuff is the closest match I found.
