Transmission is shot. Buy new? Rebuild?

I've been having a slight rattle coming from my transmission when I was idling for a month or so. It would turn into whine when I was driving. It started popping out of gear while I was driving.
While I was driving last week, the transmission rattled it's last and started grinding. I couldn't shift gears and it was hard to even role in neutral. Clutch seemed to be working but the gears sounded like they were all out of place.

I brought it to the transmission shop. They gave me some options.
1. buy new transmission for $2900
2. rebuild (medium price)
3. look for used transmission (most economical)

Which option makes the most sense?
Keep in mind that I bought the car March 2011 with 46k miles on it for $9000. Turbo had been replaced.
Tires are new as of last week. Odometer now is ~60k.

The "new" trans is probably a reconditioned one

You do not want to rebuild yours because and debris would probably kill the current trans

do you know what happend to make the tranny go? my final drive baring let go and went through everything and chewed the s*** out of it all.

They're taking it apart now. Should know by Monday.
So you're saying the p5 trans is a good swap? Would an authorized trans shop install that?

yuppers i picked up mine with 40,000 km on it for $400 from an auto wrecker. probably even less for you being in the states. pretty good bang for your buck.
