"sport" automatic shift knob

I see so you just push it over to the side now, then go down to drive. The space below park is like a safety I guess? Cause you have to move it over to engage drive?

I really like macdaddy's knob.... wait a minute, that didnt sound right...

IMO, the feeling of the shifter is great.. only complain I have is, the "manual mode" should have been on the left side, not on the right side :D

But I noticed in other "manu-matic" transmission, to downshift, you have to pull it back, and to upshift, you have to pull the shifter foward....wich I dont think it makes sens.

to all sport automatic transmission guys or girls....any opinions on that ?

sportmatic

Hey there,

This is my first post on this forum. I hope I can share some knowledge, as well as pick up a few tips and tricks.

I've had my sportmatic since October. It may seem that the upshift/downshift pattern is backwards but it was explained to me this way: when braking hard while racing, it's natural for the body to push forward to downshift, as in pushing a 5 speed forward to first gear. And to upshift when accelerating hard, to pull toward you.

It actually makes sense when you try it a few times. The other companies that work it the opposite way, are thinking "logically" - up to upshift, down to downshift. I guess it's just a matter of preference with each manufacturer.

Cheers, Mark :)

I see now the logic about the up to upshift and the down to downshift.... But i guess i prefer the Mazda way....wished they put it on the left side...

Good post 03BluP5

Oh yeah....welcome to the forum.

maybe in japan, RHD it IS on the correct side for them, but for LHD it is switched so its farther away.

no clue, but it seems possible.

sportmatic knob

Not to diss anyone's knob (LOL) but I really like the sportmatic "knob" as is.
I had an '02 Mica Blue P5 regular auto and traded just for the new sportmatic. The rubber shift lever on the '02 is so lame compared to the quality two-tone leather unit on the sportmatic.
As well, there were a few other nice little additions/changes to the '03, well worth the additional $300 CND in base price, plus the sportmatic was $300 more than the regular auto.
Basically, the Canadian P5 is not as well-equipped or it took longer to get the "extras" as the American models. We still don't have the side airbags and only recently got the factory leather option and the sharp chrome wheel option! (after I bought mine - damn!)
However, the good news for us is we pay less for our cars, once you do the exchange.

Cheers, Mark :)
