Spark plugs

don't bother, NGK bkr5e @.044 for stock, go a colder plug/smaller gap according to mods, if you want a long lasting plug get bkr#eIX.

Don't get the E3 plugs. I read a lot of reviews and people are saying they are going bad within 10k miles and just sucked for their car. I went with iridium plugs and could tell a difference. My engine runs smoother and I get a little better gas milage and a little bit more power. They are a little bit more but I think it is worth it, they should last a while longer as well.

I was just curious. Ive heard some cars that run anything but stock plugs run like s***. Ive only had my car for about 4 months and still dont know a whole lot about them. How do they run with synthetic oil?

ive seen a few thread started on here that people who use different plugs have some issues, but i really dunno why. NGK makes a great product so why risk it.

synthetic oil, you just have try it and see if how it runs. It depends on how the engine has worn over the years. Easiest way to tell is just to try it. If there is an increase in warmup noise, oil consumption or all a sudden you got oil leaks switch back to conventional.

Im my case it runs much nicer on synthetic. I use amsoil signature 10w30 along with their filter. ive got forge internals so they're always a little noisy upon start up, as well as harder valve springs. I was using conventional during break-in and once i switch to amsoil i can hear a noticeable decrease in noise during warm up.

go to your local parts house (AutoZone, Advance Auto, NAPA, etc) and ask for regular NGK plugs to fit a 2001 protege with 1.6 engine. the 1.6 plugs for the US are the stock 2.0 plugs that come in the JDM FS-ZE. they are extended reach, and work fantastic in the US protege 2.0 engine.

Ill do that. Whats the deal with people running the 1.8 coil packs?

i think those are the zfr5e, im not a hundred percent sure though.

the 1.8 coils are larger, the idea is that they will produce a better spark at higher rpms than the smaller stock coils.

Yes, ZFR5's are the long reach and those combined with the 1.8 coils do make a noticeably smoother idle. They also aren't located on top of the hot ass engine. But you'll need to trim 2 spark plug boots to fit around the oem coil mounts or get a 2000-2002 626 valve cover that doesn't have those coil mounts. Make sure it has cam sensor hole on front like ours if you do, only those yr models are the ones to get.
