So went from automatic shifter to automatic sport shifter

:
02 Mazda P5
So I went to the junk yars the other day and saw a 03 with the auto sport shifter and liked how it looked. After doing research I had not seen anything on switching the shifters. I ended up just going back a few days and got the shifter and did the swap and turn out alright.

No, trans is the same that's just controlled by the Ecu. At least that's what I've read but I doubt they would need a diff trans as the shifting is controlled by the Ecu in the first place . Plus we're talking about a forzda

And here it is with a new/used shift knob. Found the knob and the junk yard, just not sure what kind of car it was that I pulled it from.

Couldn't a reflash do just fine? Auto ecu is auto ecu only thing being changed is manually controlling shift points

Just noticed on the stock shifter there is a harness that plugs into it, which is a 4 plug harness. 2 wires for the overdrive and 2 wires for the illumination. The sport shifter has about 6 to 10 wires, so I'm pretty sure it will not work.

Might need the harness, I'm sure the extra wires are power and grounds for up and down shifting along with whatever tells it its in manual mode. This is a 100% guess though

I have been thinking about doing this swap for years but, I thought for sure you would need the complete set up... tranny,ECU,shifter etc. I am very interested now if just swaping the shifter and ECU would make it all work.

Let us know if you can make it work as a sport shift.

Thanks

I really do think you also need a tranny, there no way a non sport car would have the sport tranny. Was talking to one of the techs and there no way it would work without the sport tranny.

i dont agree. There is no difference in power so i believe the trannys are the same. its not sport vs non sport all the autostick does is manually drop a gear up or down just like giving the car 3/4 throttle does or shifting from D to 2 and 1... I am pretty sure the trannys are the same its just an ecu and pigtail needed

So how hard was it to swap the physical appearance of it? Did you have to swap out the internal linkages? Since the old one moves down straight and the sport shift has zig zag patterns?

Good work it looks nice

The base is the same, you need to criss cross the linkages. For the ilumination I removed the old light fron the original shifter and disconnected the wires for the overdrive and re connect the light to the new shifter. I did noticed the shifter is always ingaged, which mean you don't need to apply the brake to move the gears. I do believe if you get the linkage with the sport shifter it may fix the always engaged gear shifting. I did get it a fews days layer but havnt had a chance to install the linkage.
