rear main seal

For those of you who have replaced the rear main seal, how did you press it in? It says to use a special service tool, but i'm wondering if I can get it in the correct depth with something different.

i used a hammer and a 3/8" extension when i did mine.

Are we talking about the same seal, the one on the tranny side of the motor?

yes lol the one that goes around the end of the crank that you bolt your flywheel to.

Agreed, I used a rubber hammer and light taps to ease it into the ring..

Well what I did was small taps with a rubber mallet to get it started and then once it was started I went around it with the extension and hammer with taps little by little until it was fully seated

ABS piping cut smooth on the seal side.
