The GN is a SC 6. Properly tuned with a real driver behind the wheel, it should blow away the MSP as you said.

The Grand National is a 3.8 SFI Turbocharged V6.
(I'm not trying to flame or anything, I owned a 1987 T-Type part of the time while I was a member here...) Stock, a T-Type or GN (Same drivetrain) would beat a MSP, as I've seen a bone stock GN run a mid 14 sec. run in the 1/4

Anyways, with about $3,000 worth of mods, my T-Type ran a best of ET: 10.760, MPH: 126.00, 60ft: 1.520. and that was only because my tires were getting worn. I was running about 23 PSI if I remember correctly. I ran 30PSI on some leftover motorcyle gas one night (110 octane) too bad I wasn't at the track that night. Fast would have been an understatement. :)

At any rate, those cars can be really, REALLY bad ass with a little work. Just for the people who didn't know, I figured I would add my .02 cents...

Here's a link to where I raced a Brand New Cobra in my T...

Yes......the Buick Grand National's (GN or GN-X) were automatics, and they were 'very' quick. It was a V6 with a Turbo. This guy must have been running on 1/2 of his cylinders. One of those cars would destroy the MAZDASPEED in a straight line fight. They did have a fuel cut-off however, at 125mph.

Of course; at turn one, while he is busy trying to keep from running off the road, the MAZDASPEED would glide right through.

They made some lesser turboed 3.8 liter V6 Buicks as well that did not carry the GN name plate but looked (for the most part) the same. The GNX was the culmanation of the breed which came to an end around 1988 and I know that Federal law enforcement bought several of them that were "specially" outfitted for the job.
There were many GN's but only a few GNX's.
That had ceramic turbine wheels.
In short a real GNX would have killed you even with a dumbass driving.

The GNX was designed to be the "Grand National to end all Grand Nationals". Outwardly the GNX resembles the Grand National but the modifications performed on these cars made them one of the fastest, best handling and most sought after cars Buick had ever built. It was developed by the then Advanced Concepts & Marketing Vehicles manager, Mike Doble. The car was to be converted by ASC/McLaren. McLaren had been involved with the original Buick/McLaren V-6 racer used at Indy and the 24 valve V-6 Wildcat concept car. McLaren had also developed some early prototypes of the Intercooled Grand National. The basic concept was to build the car to be a full second quicker than the Grand National and improve it's handling. Although plans called for Engine blueprinting, head porting, special bearings, shot-peened rods, and a high-rpm valve train, testing of stock Grand National engines showed that the GNX goal could be met without opening the engine. There were 547 GNXs built and all were 2! doo r coupes and optioned the same, there were no additions or deletions.
To quote the Owners manual "The GNX is a special Grand National with certain modifications to accentuate it's already outstanding performance."

Basically the body and drivetrain remained common with the turbocharged Regal Grand National with a few exceptions.

What the Critics Say:
"The GNX is an ax-wielding barbarian laying waste to everything in it's path"
"Rockets to 60 mph in 4.7 seconds and squirts through the quarter-mile in 13.5 seconds at 102 mph"
(Tony Assenza) Car & Driver, May 1987: Buick GNX

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"This (GNX) is no batamweight, over-motored car. It's a hefty 3,500 pound family sedan. ANd on this cold, blustery day, five very large men-give or take a pound, 1,082 pounds of them-fill up every inch of it's livable interior space. What the hell-a stand-on-it run is in order. In less than 20 seconds-20 seconds!-fuel shutoff valve kicks in signifying the ride is over. That's impressive."

(Dutch Mandel) Autoweek, February 16, 1987: Speedway Born

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"More than a straight-line rocket sled, the GNX is a suspension tuned to hug the corners like a Grand Prix car."

(Paul Garson) Car Craft, September 1987: The Ultimate American Muscle Machine

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------

"For you who remember the spine-snapping GTOs, Road Runners, 4-4-2s and Shelbys of 20 years ago and think they'll never be equalled in this era of desmogged Wimpmobiles, they have. And passed. By the Buick GNX."
"And they came up with a 300 hp stroker that looks like Darth Vader's Staff Car. One that, unlike the GTOs and Road Runners, doesn't pitch and yaw when when you ask for a smoking burnout. It goes straight. And goes. And goes."

(Scott Heimer, Auto Editor) Philadelphia Daily News: Ride On!

Lets keep this going....

even my grandmother could burn someone in a GNX....they were all Automatic if I remember correctly.

In it's day.....

even now: The GNX Buick (only about 750 made), was quite fast. Governed to only about 125mph. But; quite fast in the 1/4 mile. Hey! We're talking 1988, here. Of course; beyond the dragstrip, it wasn't too much.

No Matter!

I still beat him?I dunno?OH WELL!

And by the way ,it was a GN ,not a GNX for the record!

Matt;)

Okay,,,, A GN would still toast us. These things rans like 13.5 out of the box. But good show! Ha! (rofl) Cherish it.

:)

"out of the box"

I wish there was a GN in a box under the tree when I came down the stairs Christmas morning. Prolly more like a crate under the pine tree out front, but I'd definately take it out of the box!

I raced a go cart on Saturday. I had the kid off the line, but then he boosted and he was gone. That little tike was rude too.
:wtf:

Man

Yeah those Brigg's are some mean beasts.
I know Wally World carries what? Like a 400WHP model air cooled.

disclaimer:The proceeding was a JOKE.
If Briggs & Straton made a 400 whp go-cart I would have bought it for my 10 yr old so she could run down Democrats. :p  :p
"Mow that b****" she could proclaim as they fall beneath her mighty 10 inch wheels. The bodies would drag for a while though.
Maybe I could install some kind of scraper bar to remove the carcass. Like a cow catcher for a go-cart.

Now....... a racing Kart would be fun!! About $2,500 and up to get started. But; if you have to be near an area that has such events.

They haul some serious ass!! Shifter Karts are sweet, too.

People remember, the GN is AT LEAST 15 years old, with probably NOT ONE DAY of easy driving on it. 15 years can take ALOT out of any car, even if properly maintained, per mfrs suggestions.

Now, if the car is owned by an anal retentive gear head, yeah, it will deffinitly kill a MSP. :D

just my 2 bits. go on and flame me, I beat a damn Monte SS, same timeframe as the GN built. and running a V-8. :D
