clocked at 84 in a 65, merging onto the highway since no one would let me on pain in my ass eh? i bet the cop just wanted to see the car up close and personal ;)

I was caught in March: 83 in a 50. The ticket would have been $172.00. I went to court, and got off with just court costs of $153.00, and nothing on my record. It was my first ticket in 13 years.

He pulsed me with a KA band Instant-ON gun. I was coming out of a diving left turn - he squeezed the trigger - my Passport 8500 sounded - too late!! It's perhaps the best radar detector money can buy; but when you are travelling alone like that, you stand no chance, if you are pulsed.

just last night i got clocked 51 in a 35. i knew what was gonna happen so i turned down a side road real quick. couldnt find any suitable hiding spots so i just slowed down. the cop cought up and on went the light rack. *s**** im thinkin to myself. then i came up with this great story: "those 2 guys in the black civic were messing with me and i was trying to get away. i thought it was them coming down the side street after me" the cop wrote me a 25 dollar ticket for not using turn signals. thank god that cop wasnt a dick. thank you officer man

Is that the one that has the detector nodes on the outside bumpers? What are you thought on the Valentine1. Personally everything that I have read (and this is probably a little outdated) stated the Valentine1 is the best other than getting custom radar detection.

heh heh
129 in an 80
that's kmph, not mph
got it lowered to 109 in an 80 because of a good talker in one of the other 2 proteges that was stopped...
Thanks Dave!

From Dam Neck to Mayport

Whenever my ship would send me to a "C" school in Dam Neck (Virginia Beach,Va.), I would most likely drive (the government pays you more for your whole trip). And on my way back to Florida going down 95, I would floor it...110 average speed. And if a cop pulled me, I would just show him my orders, and tell him that I was on leave and my ship just did a re-call on me.

I got pulled twice doing this.....and got away both times!!:p

The V1 (Valentine One), I also considered. Too many false alarms, and the "Arrow"s, I think are a bit silly. If it alerts, you slow down. Enough said!

I'm not sure what you mean by detector nodes on the bumpers. Some new SUVs have nodes (sensors) on them that detect a person or object. But; that is not a Radar Detector.

There is an exterior mounting unit by Escort. The Laser Shifter they offer for Laser Radar Protection. Laser Shifter ZR3

There are also some other manufacturers that make exterior defense systems.

I though the same thing about the V1. The V1 has three different modes: All Bogeys, Logic and Advanced Logic. Most tests are done in the All Bogeys mode. When the V1 is set in Logic or Advanced Logic, false alarms are almost nil.

When I bought my V1, I thought the directionial arrows were a joke, but I was wrong. As time passed I relied on the directional arrow to help locate the source. Either that unmarked Camaro 3 car ahead or the tropper on the bridge shooting your rear with radar. The directionial arrow is another tool to aide you from being caught.

I got nailed going 89 in a 65 on the PA turnpike. The bad thing was that i was following 2 other cars and the cop pulled all three of us over. I was also with my dad driving his 3000GT vr4, the cop was a real dick and actually asked my dad why he was "letting" me drive that fast. I really wanted to tell the cop that it had nothing to do with him, i drive the way i want to drive. And i was so close to my exit, like 3 miles. Oh well.

Yeah but is it just me, or are there fewer cops in Canada? I used to drive across Ontario several times a year, from Port Huron/Sarnia to Niagara Falls/Buffalo. I never got pulled over, even though I would exceed the speed limit by anywhere from 20 to 40 kph. I don't think I saw more than one cop, and that was on a busy stretch of the QEW.

I was doing 60 in a 30 so I got busted. I didn't have my radar detector so oh well. I have it to lawer and paid $69.00. She went to court for me and got me off with no points and no school but I had to pay court cost $201.00 ouch!!! oh well beats paying $390 and 4 points.

Radar Detectors are illegal here.

They are illegal in certain states as well!

The nodes I speak of are just sensors that are placed in your bumpers and can get a longer range and better for that matter than just an average in the box radar detector. There are some places in Florida that do the hook-ups, but it is like $1000+ for it. The directional arrows are really key to the V1. Sometimes you will pick up rebounding signals from cops on a bridge or another road and it is not for you. You may slow down, but you get to know where the signal is from. Plus it tells you which band it is: laser, k, or ka. It has different beeps for each band as well. Even with some switching on and off as long as you are not on a deserted road you will pick them up before they pick you up.
I personally think it is the bomb! It has never annoyed me and the feature to have a hidden faceplate is always a bonus. Plus I don't know of many companies out there that make detectors for bikes either.

And for everyone wondering about different things with speed traps and radar detectors you should check out TLC. They had a couple of months ago a great program that explored and explained a lot about the facts and the myths! There are also some great books that were featured in that program.

Isn't VA, the only state that still outlaws radar detectors?

Some good points, indeed! I like the Escort products, and I am sure Mike Valentine's V1 is excellent, as well. Most know that he was the co-founder of Escort. He broke away a little over 10 + years ago, I believe, to start Valentine V1. Of course, the Passport 8500 indicates all bands, as well, and has incredible range. Is the V1 worth $100.00 more than the 8500? Unlikely.

It's really personal choice. They are the 2 best on the market, certainly without going outside the car (vehicle), and spending $1,000 +. Also; the Escort Laser Unit is the only one of it's kind, that I know of. Not much Laser shot in my area, so I won't be buying that.

52 in a 15... yeah, got nailed in a skool zone. (no) (although was like 5:30pm, and school was cpl blocks over) went to court, ADA didn't even wanna talk to me, sent me to Driver Safety Class. (flame) Cool thang wuz that the instructor asked who the Judge was, turned out he knew him and said just tell him Mr. Whutevah sayz hello. Got a 20 in a 15 and $25 fine. -plus Ins. went down cuz of DSC!! (upyours)

A few years ago when I got my husband the V1 the 8500 wasn't out. At the time it was the absolute best. Is it worth the $100 more. Well that I am not sure about.....I haven't used the 8500. But with the V1 I haven't had a speeding ticket nor has my husband. It really is an awesome little machine and considering that we have saved ourselves time and money in the long run it is totally worth it to us.

NEWBIEs take note of the following........(or anyone else thinking about buying a V1, 8500 or other good detector)

Good! No tickets is a very good thing! If you are traveling alone, and get pulsed, that's the danger. That's what happened to me. The beauty of a unit as sensitive as a V1 or 8500 is their ability to sense so far ahead. None of that applies, if you get pulsed with a KA band Instant On gun. Your toast! And; both manufacturers will tell you that.

Now; if you are on the highway; there is a good chance you will be picking up pulses far ahead, as other cars are being shot. This is sufficient warning for you to slow. Most of us experience this while traveling on the highway. It's when you are by yourself, either on the highway, or country road (in my case), that you become susceptible.

That is why it is always best to have 2 radar detectors! The idiot flyin by you who doesn't own one and you own liitle machine!
What type of country road were you on to get zapped, i.e. a straight away? you don't normally drive this road and know the possible traps?

It was 7:15 am on a Sunday. We were headed out to the lake to take pictures. The Trooper was oncoming. I had just exited a sweet 85 mph downhill diving left turn onto the flat section. The trooper came over the rise about 400 yards ahead of me, saw me exiting the turn at speed - when he triggered it. I flew right into the trap. The Passport 8500, of course, pegged. He stopped right in his lane with his lights flashing. No chance!
