He pulsed me with a KA band Instant-ON gun. I was coming out of a diving left turn - he squeezed the trigger - my Passport 8500 sounded - too late!! It's perhaps the best radar detector money can buy; but when you are travelling alone like that, you stand no chance, if you are pulsed.

Is that the one that has the detector nodes on the outside bumpers? What are you thought on the Valentine1. Personally everything that I have read (and this is probably a little outdated) stated the Valentine1 is the best other than getting custom radar detection.

The V1 (Valentine One), I also considered. Too many false alarms, and the "Arrow"s, I think are a bit silly. If it alerts, you slow down. Enough said!

Radar Detectors are illegal here.

They are illegal in certain states as well!

The nodes I speak of are just sensors that are placed in your bumpers and can get a longer range and better for that matter than just an average in the box radar detector. There are some places in Florida that do the hook-ups, but it is like $1000+ for it. The directional arrows are really key to the V1. Sometimes you will pick up rebounding signals from cops on a bridge or another road and it is not for you. You may slow down, but you get to know where the signal is from. Plus it tells you which band it is: laser, k, or ka. It has different beeps for each band as well. Even with some switching on and off as long as you are not on a deserted road you will pick them up before they pick you up.
I personally think it is the bomb! It has never annoyed me and the feature to have a hidden faceplate is always a bonus. Plus I don't know of many companies out there that make detectors for bikes either.
And for everyone wondering about different things with speed traps and radar detectors you should check out TLC. They had a couple of months ago a great program that explored and explained a lot about the facts and the myths! There are also some great books that were featured in that program.

Well that I am not sure about.....I haven't used the 8500. But with the V1 I haven't had a speeding ticket nor has my husband. It really is an awesome little machine and considering that we have saved ourselves time and money in the long run it is totally worth it to us.

NEWBIEs take note of the following........(or anyone else thinking about buying a V1, 8500 or other good detector)
Good! No tickets is a very good thing! If you are traveling alone, and get pulsed, that's the danger. That's what happened to me. The beauty of a unit as sensitive as a V1 or 8500 is their ability to sense so far ahead. None of that applies, if you get pulsed with a KA band Instant On gun. Your toast! And; both manufacturers will tell you that.
Now; if you are on the highway; there is a good chance you will be picking up pulses far ahead, as other cars are being shot. This is sufficient warning for you to slow. Most of us experience this while traveling on the highway. It's when you are by yourself, either on the highway, or country road (in my case), that you become susceptible.

That is why it is always best to have 2 radar detectors! The idiot flyin by you who doesn't own one and you own liitle machine!
What type of country road were you on to get zapped, i.e. a straight away? you don't normally drive this road and know the possible traps?
