Questions about buying used 5 (Toronto)

My wife and I are stilling looking for a used Mazda5... either 2010 (preferred) or 2009. So far I only talked about pricing with 1 Mazda dealer, but they only gave $2000 for my trade-in, which according to Canadian Black Book ranges from $4200-$6000 (eyeballs). So no deal, and their stocks aren't quite what we want anyway.

We are looking at a couple of listings, just wonder is the price decent? How much can I possibly bargain down?

1) 2009 auto GT + leather, <70k km, $16,000
2) 2010 auto GT + leather < 50k km, $20,000

(2) is pretty much exactly what we want, including color... except it's abit more $$ than we're planning for. Is that price fair?

And also, if I buy a used car, does the manufacture warranties carry over if it's not expired yet? say, the 5 years powertrain..

Any tips appreciated :)

Ripoff if you ask me

Maybe it's Canada, but my brand new 2010 MZ5 Sport with popular package (ground effects+spoiler) cost me $20990 and they even gave me $9200 for my 2006 Jetta with 60,000 miles and few collisions, but fixed all, and air bag light on, and an 2 more years extended warranty. I don't know this price seems too high to me. I ended up paying $15000 for a brand new car.

Yeah I do think the price is usually higher in Canada. Tho by how much, especially for used cars, I'm really not sure. My last 2 cars were both bought new. That's why I would love to get more opinions here :)

$9200 for your jetta trade-in seems really good tho!! My civic does have <150,000km (~94000miles), but is accident free. I wasn't expecting the max $6000+ from the Canadian BlackBook quote, but $2000 was just ridiculous. And the funny thing.... that Mazda dealer just called me like 10 mins ago.... saying now they have customers who want my civic... so they can now give me $4200 for the trade-in if I'm still interested in buying & when I can go back to talk...... yeahhhhhh right.... damn liars.

I'm in Vancouver. First advice I can offer is to sell your car privately and use the cash as a large down payment on the Mazda. 1. You'll be able to get a much better price privately than as a trade in. 2. You'll have a good leg to stand on when negotiating because not only is the dealership going to get a nice big chunk of cash, but they'll also still make money off of you through financing.

Those prices don't seem too bad... as a starting point... I'll give you my advice on how to deal with a dealership selling a used vehicle through an example. a few years ago I bought a 2006 Toyota Matrix XR in great shape with low kms from a Honda dealership (first piece of advice, try to find what you're looking for on another brands lot, dealerships always want to get rid of non own-brand vehicles).

They advertised the car for $14595. I walked in, told them I had done my research, had been looking for a month, knew what these cars should cost and had appointments to look at two more today after this one. I could only afford to spend $11000... what can you do for me? And I kid you not, the rep went back and forth between his manager and me six times... yes six times... I was there for about 2 hours I think. Each time she came back, the price had dropped a little more. Each time I would re-tell my full story exactly the same and then just stare at her. Finally they brought it down to $11000 but still wanted to charge me a total of around $900 in some weird fees... I just kept saying no until it was fully down to $11000, just stuck to my guns... you can't be afraid to let them know that your max is your max... and be willing to walk out.

You've already experienced how quickly they'll change they're minds... you're in the drivers seat. Go get-em!

woh thanks Wishmaster. I don't have any experience buying used car at all, and never would I even imagine I could bargain from $14595 down to $11000!

Right now I like the "2010 auto GT + leather < 50k km, $20,000" the most. It's from a small used car dealer. The average asking price from BlackBook for 2010 GT says $16,000, and trade-in value from $12-14000. What would be a good starting point for me to ask for? $16000 straight up?

As for selling my old car privately, I was considering that too. Looked over the process abit and kinda seems like alot of work. Guess I'll have to take a look at it again. Getting 2-3 grands more (easily) does seem like worth spending some time on....

I'm thinking about offering $17000 to the dealer with the "2010 auto GT + leather < 50k km, $20,000", coz so far that's the only one with that trim/package in that color, which my wife wants. How does that look?

I don't need to car in a hurry, per say, but I do want to get it done quickly to get it out of my head :) And also to not wait til spring/summer when there probably are alot of ppl buying cars, and hence harder to talk price down perhaps.

Any other experiences and tips appreciated...

First thing I'd do is have a look at what similar mileage and condition Mazda5's are selling for privately in your area... that's how I knew what the Matrix I was negotiating for was worth. I spent about a week checking out the various places these cars come up for sale (Craigslist, Autotrader, classifieds, etc.). I can't tell you whether or not that's the right price to go in with because I myself am not going to take the time to figure it out... that's on you. But know this... dealerships take lease returns and trade-in's like yours at low, low prices and then try and sell them for high, high prices... there is always lots and lots of wiggle room in-between. It is more work, but I didn't mind doing it to save just over 3 grand. I also could have traded my other car in for 3 grand less than I sold it privately. So for about 2 weeks of some extra (not really hard) work, I saved 6 grand... I don't think I have to tell you, that 6 grand is a lot of money! Now of course, if you're selling your car privately, there are a number of things you'll need to do to ensure a high price and a quick sale... but that's a forum topic for another day...

thanks again Wishmaster.

I guess i should have mentioned how I came with the number & be abit more specific with my questions.. :)

I checked AutoTrader but for 2010's 5, there's only 1 private listing in all of Canada.
My main consideration to come up with the $17000 number is from Canadian Black Book, which lists the trade-in value for 2010, 5GT auto 50000km + leather, from $12-$14,000+. And it lists the average asking price for 2010s 5 for $16,000, but that does not take into account about mileage, leather seats and auto trans. So I figured I will try $17000.

Have u tried Canadian Blackbook during ur search? Was it close to the numbers u got from other sources?
