Premature Tire Wear - Interesting Experiment

Hi folks,

I have a 2006 touring, one of the very first arrived in USA. Got it back then as a present for my wife and the car has been so great, there is very little to post about, so I have been quiet for years.

But I did one interesting long term experiment and hopefully could be helpful to someone, so decided to post about it.

As most of you are painfully aware, there were some cars with some pretty serious tire wear issues. Mine was one of those. The OE tiers were completely bald at 17.000 miles on the inside. We drove them till round 20.000 miles and at the time I took them off you could see the inner belt was becoming visible! Nothing new so far to the regulars on these forums.....

Then I decided to run an experiment. Got new tires and decided to just replace the used tires, but NOT to perform any kind of alignment or anything at all! Then to watch what happens with the next set of tires.

For this purpose I went to TireRack and got the cheapest (back then) tire available in the stock size. It was a set of Kumho KH16. Put them on the car, inflated them at 40 PSI (I like to run my tires high) and started monitoring as they were aging.....

To make the long story short, we are at 62.000 miles today, which means the tires have been there for 42.000 miles and all four of them are wearing ABSOLUTELY PERFECTLY all around! I am so stunned, if I could not see this with my eyes every day, I would not believe it! Not only that, but they are not any near the wear marks, so I can say with confidence that we would pull another 15.000 miles on them with ease and maybe little bit more!

Now, I do realize this sounds like total BS, but it is a reality to me and it is the reason I am writing this after so long as perhaps someone else may experience similar results or if someone is in a need for new tires, I would say based on my personal experience, these tires are an absolute pleasant surprise!

And again, I have never performed an alignment on this car and beside that, have never done anything else either, just running full synthetic oil and changing it every 10K and that is really it. It is our absolute battle car, gets 50% city and 50% highways, roughly. On top of that, we went from CA to UT last December in some really bad weather and lots of snow - with these tires never had to put chains, not even once. It is really the best overall tire I ever had on any car considering how cheap it was and how well is performing in all sorts of conditions plus the added and unexpected longevity.

Please forgive me if this is "old news" (meaning if you all already know about this model tire) or if this is not the case for other users. I am reporting my long term findings with the hope it can help someone. Perhaps mine is a very isolated case, but it is a fact that I did not perform an alignment and the new tires are wearing in a fantastic way, so there is something to ponder about :)

Hope all is well and happy motoring with your great 5s!
