No rear speakers??

Someone enlighten me. Do we not have speakers in the back seat behind the passengers head? My friend was sitting back there and he is telling me no sound is coming out. So I start toying with the unit thinking the fade is messed up, not that, so I check all the wires, not that, but then I look in the under side of the trunk and I swear all I see is the underside of the grill that is supposedly covering the speaker. Is there no speakers back there or are mine F'd up??

There are rear door speakers but I dont think there are any in the in the rear deck.

These are the speakers in the MSP (also listed in 1st MP3's Sticky in the Car Audio section)

6x8" Kenwood Excelons in the Front Doors
6" Kenwood Excelons in the Rear Doors
8" Kenwood Sub (not Excelon...and a POS! Mine broke for the second time. Good thing I'm getting a new set-up!)

The two grilles on the rear deck (with the kenwood emblems) are ports for the subwoofer. The enclosure has ductwork that leads to them.

Um....nope. I just removed my sub enclosure this weekend. The sub is in a sealed enclosure, firing downward into the trunk. The top side is solid particle board or plywood covered in carpet. I also had to rip out the rear deck covering, and those holes in the rear deck are covered by plastic pieces. No ports on this sorry as sub...they'd probably break it anyway!

Hmmm. So they are just for show then.

Not even really for show. The ES had speakers in there. Basically if you pull up the rear deck you can see where the speakers used to be. Mazda put a POS plastic cover in the hole where the speakers used to be.

agreed with all these posts. u might be able to put some speakers back there though. but im not sure if anyone knows or has tried this yet.

I found this myself when I tore out that crappy Kenwood sub. There are no ports, just useless screens that look cool. I do think that the car is prewired for it though. The deck has a control feature for midbass drivers (that we currently do not have). And if memory serves those back plates did have wires running to them. If it is pre-wired the install would be very easy.

On another note the Kenwood enclosure uses what looks to be a 1" thick peice of mdf, or whatever the wood is that is DAMN heavy compared to other boxes. When I took mine out, alon with the mounting hardware I drove around for like 2-3 weeks before putting my new sub in. I was amazed to find that I could actually feel a difference in acceleration. This has given me a bug to take as much weight out of this baby as i can :D .

awesome man, yeah u might be right about the prewired thing but someones gonna have to check that for me as i dont have an MSP myself and Dexter who i hang out with i dont see him all the time.
