New owner - looking for barrier

Hello Everyone,

Since Friday - I am the owner of a GS base model... (the budget did not give me a choice!!!). I will have to take a picture or two... but it is a 2009 blue with tinted windows, no other accessories or options.

Kinda different from my 2000 Suzuki Swift (boom06)

I have been reading up on the Mazda5 for a few weeks now. Even though I have researched, I still can't find one important information... can I get a cargo barrier? I will not often be using the 3rd row seats, but I do not wish for ANYTHING to come up front...

Anyone out there who can inform me?

Regards,
Phratt

Welcome to the family. No info on a 5-specific barrier, but generic/universal ones have been around for years. Volvo wagons seem to require barriers, as I have never seen one without a barrier:).

Check measurements on their website.

Hi KBrian,

That is what I thought - for Mazda USA and Canada.
I'll have to check out Mazda UK as they seem to have accessories we do not have here.

have you heard of anyone using a cargo barrier on this forum? Might get useful information... search results weren't useful.

I just keep looking at my mica blue Mazda5... brand new toy!!! (drive)

As I am looking, I think of the Swift. Can you imagine that the Suzuki once carried 15 bags of cement? At another time, a dozen or so of 2x4 8 feet long, all windows and doors closed, me inside driving stick shift (6 feet tall - 300 pounds). Me and a friend in it (both the same size) on a road trip for 2 weeks, the back loaded to the roof... What will I do with this one??

By the way, is the Mazda 5 a car or a truck? Can't seem to decide how to call it...

Regards,
Phratt

Have a look at this forum about the interior/cargo flexibility to see the 5 in action. Could put that Swift to shame.

BTW, I like to call my 5 a sport wagon.

Already did... the question is more of a "what will I be able to do with it" type.

There is a cargo cover available for the Mazda 5 for behind the 2nd row...

http://www.mazdastuff.com/product.cfm?ProductID=2301

As for an actual barrier for the void space between the 2nd row seats... a quick fix could be to put a piece of plywood or MDF board in between. Ideally I'd love to import a karakuri from Europe/Asia. *drool*

but I do not wish for ANYTHING to come up front..

Please define "ANYTHING" because I get these farts that will go anywhere..., barrier or not (first)

So, are you asking about a DOG or CAT ??

Please give a few examples. Be cause if it is a dog or a cat...

AGAIN, we need to know WHAT he's trying to keep from coming UP FRONT because that will not keep a dog or cat from coming up front.

Hey...
ZOMBIES?

Because that thing, well dang it, just about NOTHIHG will not stop a dam zombie! trust me I know (poke) *wink*

Ewwww, wood splinters and saw dust as well as HOW DO YOU KEEP IT IN PLACE? Unless you were to cover it in cloth or leather and have a way to fasten it down, etc.

Ideally I'd love to import a karakuri from Europe/Asia. *drool*

What type of karakuri ?

The Doll, the wood craft or ...robots?

if it's robots... look out !

Trust me ROBOTS can get through more things than a zombie can !! They are very persistant !! :)

Well here is what I recomend, dog, cat, zombie or Killer robot, even if it;s for bags of food, you never know when they could go crazy!

This works well..

and...

By the way, is the Mazda 5 a car or a truck?

Like KBrian said, "Sport Wagon" is best used... (hippy)
Good luck!

Peace!(rei)

Hi everyone,

DKaz
I know about the cargo cover. This might be the "last resort" option. I does cover up most of what is in the back end, but does not offer much "security" for flying objects in case of impact.

Speedkid
Thank you for the welcome msg

As I said up above - flying objects in case of impact, and let's also add when driving the "sport wagon" a bit hard...

I am used to having hatchbacks / wagons like the focus. But I was surprised to hear the gallon of windshield washer go from side to side when turning the corner normally. Never happened with the other cars.

Protecting the children has no cost limit...

And I too do not want wood or such. I was thinking of mash or something well anchored easy to put up or take out. Something that could be bundled up.. a full sized net with strong anchors.

Never have I ever thought of imagining having a sport wagon lowered, boosted, tuned, striped.... gotta stop thinking like this !!!
This is a family vehicle. (wow) (boom04) !!!

Oh, okay sorry I missed that.

In that case.

Cargo net, cheap, easy and meet your needs.

1. Whoa slow down, ... J/K
2. You're doing it wrong, those belong in the garage, not cargo area of car. (sun)

Totaly agree, that is why you get one of these:

Hi SRG, Thanks for the reply.

Haven't been on the computer for a couple of days... too busy.

Thanks for the link, I will look into finding some secure and easy anchor points on the floor in front of 3rd row, so if we use it we will just unhook the top section and put the net on the floor with a floor mat or such on it so it does not tangle around the passenger's feet..

As for the anchoring to the roof, has anyone ever taken the roof liner out? I was thinking of screws... for the anchors... in the upside down U beams.

Regards,
Phratt

By the way...

I have found the perfect place for the gallon of windshield washer... inside the spare tire rim area. Works great.

No problem...

Phratt,

The only guy I seen take the headliner out was here:

LINK

I too have NOT taken it out YET, (Pssssst! Shhhh, just between you and me, I'm thinking of PAINTING the head liner at a body shop !! ) (whistle)

Good luck, and glad to be of help, PLEASE post some pictures when you do get it done.

So we all can see and get ideas... (group)

Sarge, I cannot begin my day without checking to see your latest post. :)

As my wife is likely less understanding/more in love with the 5 in its current condition, I must live vicariously through you and your fearless will to mod.

Long live the Sarge!(first)

Attached are the instructions for installing a Mazda OEM roof-mounted DVD player for the Mazda5 Sport (no sunroof). I was thinking about it but even the aftermarket DVD players that I liked were just to expensive for what they were so I never bought one. Now what I want is a nice 10" or larger screen that I can plug an iPod into, use the iPod as my TV show / movie processor.

Back to your question - the attached instructions will show you how to take the headliner off the correct way.

And that picture of the kids in the dog cage - reminds me of a story that an old girlfriend told me. When her sister was young (in the 1970s) she loved to ride in the dog cage in the back of the family station wagon and would throw a major fit unless she was allowed to ride there. OK, now imagine the looks that the mother was getting from other drivers.

Now I've really got to get around to taking those pictures I owe you guys and gals for all the mods and neat stuff I've done going to get done on my ride, whew... gonna take time, but I'll try.

Also IF I had more money, (*sigh* braces, cars, & college for the kids *sigh*) ohhhh I could do so much more... (headbang)

I Promise, more pictures soon !

Peace!(rei)
