A new alternator belt was just put on our P5. It is with my daughter in Columbia, MO. She tells me that when she started it this morning it squealed for a few seconds. But it was really cold, like 16F. Is squealing at that low a temperature "normal", or should she take the car back to have the belt adjusted? Under those conditions, is a belt squealing because the metal has contracted or because it is stiff? I believe there is a tensioner on that belt, but perhaps that spring is also a bit stiff when cold.
I have no experience with driving cars in those sorts of temperatures, is there some step she could take to minimize this issue? Parking it in a garage is unfortunately not in the cards- it is parked outside in the open, with no shelter of any type.
Thanks.
