NEED HELP: Friends MSP down.... read me

Man hot exhaust and very cold weather apparently Mazda's welds on this portion of the exhaust are not very strong.
This was a really good read. This could have been thermal expansion and compression ka-snap maybe the drastic difference in temp coupled with the jarring affect of the collision (all though mild) was just the right circumstance to break the exhaust.
Man wrong temp, wrong place, wrong time.
Some of the few people that have blown their motors may have encountered other circumstances that killed their engines as well that were unrelated to their mods, boost or whatever. Not that yours is blown obviously.

Ok another update.....


In the freezing cold so far we've taken the intake off put the old one back on.... taken MBC off in which the original hose was cracked so we replaced it (which is making him nervous).


Questions about his mods and warranty....


He has a grounding kit installed, new vaccum lines, and spark plug wires.... any worries on this for him regarding warranty?

I would bet some dealerships may be critical of any non-stock hose that goes to the wastegate. Hopefully your dealer will not
be. As long as the hose appears stock then I don't see a problem this break was not in any way, shape, or form caused by any mod to the car just a collection of bad cirumstances and perhaps a bad weld/pipe.

Check your front motor mount, down near the bottom of the radiator. It may have been damaged in the collision. If so, the engine would shake hard enough to bust the exhaust in two, and the starter might not work right since it's trying to literally turn the engine over. Just a thought before taking it to the dealer.

Upon further review it's very possible this was caused by the collission and didnt bust until just recently. It's only been about 13 days since he was backed into.... and this was a very minor fender bender..... the only part that was actually broken was the lower left part of the front grill.... would this be enough to knock things outta whack? It was a 5 mph fender bender.


Anywho after trying to push the cat up we noticed it would not move at all. The entire piece from the turbo to where it broke is tilted downward and the turbo seems slightly back a bit.


So if a mount was damaged, weakened, or broken would this put enough weight down to push the downpipe downwards and cause the break on the cat?


Our plan as of right now is to simply tell the insurance company that we think this is related to the accident and have it taken in to be looked at. Since the fender bender (the other guys fault) he's only put like 20 miles on it.

It seems too coincidental to me that a car with under 20k miles happens to have a catastrophic exhaust break 20 miles after it is backed into.


Thoughts? Advice?

Oh Hell yes! Get that insurance issue addressed A.S.A.P. The first thing I thought was that fender bender may have been partly to blame. You never know just how that force is going to move through your car even in a low speed collision. It probally won't be terribly expensive to fix but why pay if it was not your fault that's what insurance is for.
