Killed a DeLorean

2003 Protege5
Okay, weird kill.

Let me start by saying that I didn't buy a P5 with the expectation of killing anything, except maybe a few Matrix and Vibes. :)

I was driving around Casa Grande, AZ last night looking at houses, of all things, and I was out in one of the subdivisions that's being built on the outside of town - which means lots of freshly paved roads but very little traffic.

I was idling at the side of the road checking out this one house, and I hear a car coming. I think nothing of it until I hear it roll up next to me and stop. I'm thinking it's going to be a cop, but I look over and it's a DeLorean!

The guy opens the window (which are weird as hell on those gull wing doors) and asks me if I'm looking at houses, because he is, also. We BS for a while and of course, I can't resist asking about the car, seeing that I've seen maybe one DeLorean outside of watching Back to the Future.

After a while I ask him if he wants to race, just for fun. He agrees and we drive out to a longer stretch of back road. We agree to go from a 25mph roll, from one landmark to another one about 1/2 mile down the road. I'm thinking I'm going to get smoked, but I know my car does its best in 3rd and 4th, so I thought I'd keep up for a bit, at least.

We start out and hit the landmark, and we both gun it. He takes me by 1/2 a car right off the bat, and I redline 3rd, and 4th is getting eaten up fast. As I'm close to redlining 4th, I suddenly pull on him, big time. I don't know if he missed a gear, or what, but I never heard the Delorean stop accelerating, and that thing was LOUD. When we made the second landmark, I was ahead by 1 car and beat him.

We pulled over and had a good laugh over it, and agreed to race again some time being that he's moving to CG. He told me the Delorean had a Renault V6, and that he had some performance upgrades, which he is going to email to me. I'm still waiting - will post them if anyone is interested.

I have to chalk this up to botched driving on his part, because I can't believe my P5 could beat that car, although I don't know much about them. I looked them up on the internet and see that they seem to top out at about 197 HP with mods.

Anyone know more?

The Delorean Renault engine is a pos, It was used in Volvos for awhile before they realized the error of their ways. I love the Delorean and how they look. But I have heard some horror stories about the relability of those cars.

I think once they hit 88mph they tend to dissapear, making the other driver believe he has won. Then they re-appear only to laugh at what they saw the other driver doing 20 years in the future.

Yeah, DeLoreans are slow. Not sports cars by any stretch of the imagination. The V6 was used by Peugeot, Renault and Volvo (you will see it referred to as the "PRV V6".) You should have had no trouble taking him.

the v6 in that car wasn't even close to what DeLorean wanted in the car. i think it was only rated at 140hp? that combined with a full stainless steel body made for horrendous performance. but DAMN they look cool.

someone in my bro's city painted a del. white. the next month it was chipping all over the surface of the car. about 58.556363851238 % was gone

actually, the last year the delorean was still being made, they offered them in colors to try and boost sales. while i don't doubt that guy painted it, i do know they offered some that were painted at the factory.

None of the deloreans were ever offered with any paint. They were made for 3 years, from 81-83, all stainless steel.
DMC (Delorean Motor Company) is considering producing a new* delorean , but much quicker , V12 1250horsepower engine this time.
If you purchance a watch with the hefty price tag of $3,000, not only are you funding the project, but It saves you a place in line when they are produced.
See link below, it offers details, specs, and pictures of this very expensive watch and car. Its called the DMC2.

1250 HP? *cough*

There was a blue DeLorean on ebay just last week, so I can see that people have painted them. Don't know how successfully, but the paint looked good from the pictures.

Didn't they offer a gold-tone one at some point?

If you go to DeLorean's Web site you can order refurbished ones direct.

This could be my next project car! Now to start work on the flux capacitor!

Ugly, slow, unreliable, POS.
Just get a Focus at least you paid less .

yes moy post hasnothing to dowith it. Simply stating for the giant POS that a dalorian is you could get the same reliability and perfomance from a focus. Both terrible cars.

Simply my opinion which is what everyone else since the first post has been giving.

ok i have nothing wrong with your oppinion. It just sounded alittle off topic, but your right .

There were only 2 gold deloreans produced for the American Express (or was it Mastercard?) company as a contest prize. One of them is in an automotive museum in Reno, the other I'm not really sure, I think it's owned privately by a collector, being showcased. You can probably find more info on the delorean sites :) And those weren't painted, they were really gold (or at least gold plated). Isn't gold soft? I'd hate to dent that thing :) They were never offered with paint.
