2008 Mazda5 5MT Sport w/ Popular Package
The Toyota Wish, first released in Japan in 2003 to fill the gap between the Ipsum (Avensis in Australia) and the Japan-only Corolla-based Spacio, has been a constant top seller in the Japanese market. Built to compete with the Mazda5 and fellow Japan-only MPV the Honda Stream, the Wish continues to outperform both on the showroom floor.

Now the 2009 model is around the corner, and photos of the brochure have leaked onto the interweb. Were not likely to see the Wish in the Aussie market, but for those who like to see the many cars Toyota dont give us, this is another good looking car to complain about.

Unlike 2005s facelift, the 2009 Wish is an all-new model, with updates across the range both externally, internally, and under the bonnet. If you happen to be a family man in Japan, this might be the MPV youve been waiting for.Unlike 2005s facelift, the 2009 Wish is an all-new model, with updates across the range both externally, internally, and under the bonnet. Not bad for a To-Yoda :D

I think Toyota is not willing to risk and as much as Mazda to get this car out of their local market.

They preferred to bring the Venza to the US (ugh)

I dunno, at least it looks better so to play against the Honda Stream and the Premacy now...

Oh, and no sliders, (screwy)

Yes, me too, but this one looks good although Toyota is a brand I associate with boring cars...

I hope Mazda does not screw-up the next gen Mazda5. They've done OK with the 2nd gen Mazda3 and Mazda6, so I have faith...

So do I. And I have to agree with you and reemphasize that (current) Toyotas are crap to drive. My dad buys my younger brother (16 year old baby of the family) a 2009 Matrix AWD fully loaded with every option, biggest rims etc. My dad just thinks it's the sportiest thing ever. I take one drive in it and am like give me my minivan (Mazda5) ANY day over this!

Haha, and the funny thing is he edged out my baby sister (19yrs old) for this and she got stuck with the fully loaded, every option Mazda3 GT they had been sharing. I assured her that she was the lucky one.

Mark my words the 5 will have twice the FTD (fun-to-drive) factor that this Toyota has.

And how could we ever forget the 5 beating the Honda Stream and Odyssey around the Best Motoring course: although apparently it was turbo'd.

Do you mean this one?

No turbo there (naughty), The one with turbo is the Mazda MPV.

I agree some may argue this one may had ESC though, which comes with the JDM Mazda5 one (see how it takes the curves)

Toyota was supposed to bring a competitor for the 5 to the US market - it was originally called the Toyota Ace. But yeah, they brought a 5-seat Camry Wagon (a.k.a. the Toyota Venza). Not that there's anything wrong with the Camry Wagon, if I were in the market for a wagon it would be high on the list though the MSRP of around $25,000 seemed awful steep. This was the van I had been waiting for but again, they decided to not bring it. I assume because it would compete too much with the Sienna but that's just a guess on my part.

Speaking of which, I was at the Chicago Auto Show today, saw an interesting concept car. It's the Chevrolet Orlando, a seven-seat cross between a a vehicle like the Mazda5 and a wagon and with a diesel engine. Price unknown and it's supposed to show up in 2011. It's also unclear whether or not it will be available with manual transmission. But... it's a Chevy. It was the type of vehicle that if a European or Asian producer had made it, I would buy.

The Nissan Forum, a concept smaller van from last year, has died. Nissan will be focusing on the small commercial truck / van market (competing against vehicles like the Dodge Sprinter).

Meanwhile, the Mazda5 I rented for the weekend and put about 700 miles on ran well, my family likes it. We're back in the market.

Oh good. I was reading the YouTube comments and either someone got confused or I misread. I'm glad to hear it!

Is that the one that looked like an Opel design? If so it may in fact be built in Europe like the Saturn Astra, or at least based on European engineering. Those are good signs but I understand the stigma of buying American.

shape approaches that of the 5. But the lines don't flow very well.
the side sill looks like an after thought.

The bulge around the wheel well makes the car look like a dodge caliber.

I don't find functional use of that big piece of hollow plastic at the bottom of its doors. Maybe it is a kick plate. Or serves to 'connect the bulges' to the
surface level of the doors.

The real thing for sale now...

The original Wish, unveiled in Japan in 2003, was Toyota's not-so-subtle reply to the huge success of the Honda Stream here. It was exactly the same three-row concept with a similar range of 1.8- and 2.0-liter engines, and even the body dimensions were virtually mirror image. Honda must have been flattered. The Wish was a hit, and over six years, Toyota sold more than half a million units.

Rather confusingly, this new-generation Wish appears just days after Toyota Europe launched its own similar but different compact three-row minivan, the Verso. The two are not directly related but are chasing the same kind of customer, someone who might perhaps check out a Kia Rondo or a Mazda5 in the U.S.

In revamping the Wish, Toyota has tried to make the design more sporty and comfortable but also greener. Both 1.8- and 2.0-liter gas engines use Toyota's Valvematic technology to boost performance and economy, and all versions come with a seven-speed Sports Sequential Shiftmatic transmission.

Toyota is marketing the Wish as "right sized," meaning it's roomy but not too big for Japan's many narrow roads. The lineup includes front- and all-wheel-drive options and a choice of captain's chairs or a bench in the second row, meaning the Wish can be either a six- or a seven-passenger vehicle.

Priced at $18,623-$25,101, the compact and versatile Wish could perhaps eke out a niche in the U.S., but all signs at present are that it's for the Japan domestic market only.

Inside Line says:
Important model for Japan that just might work if it were brought over to the U.S.

All I have to say is that the stock 5 handles just as well as my modded Corolla. I want the 5! :(

2010/2011 Toyota WISH (>-<)

It is what it is folks,
the WISH has brought
competition once again
to the Premacy (Mazda 5)
in fine fashion. A few weeks
ago the son and I hit the
Toyota new car show, aside
from the BLADE, the wish was
the only real show stopper for
me. (Aside from the concept
cars and the hot models.)

130_1_l.jpg

Some will say it's not in the same
class as the 5 because it has NON-
SLIDING doors for the rear, but aside
from that, it's a lot like the Premacy.

Something you might want to pay close
attention too.... the tail lights on both
the Premacy/5 and the WISH are getting
close and that does not sit well with me..

Actually looks Pretty Nice. Smooth lines....is the 5 a Wish knockoff or is it the other way around?

According to the tail lights IMO the Mazda 5 is a knock off of the WISH.

*Thanks moderator for putting this post on the right spot too* (bump)
