hard pull vibrations

Hey all,

When accelerating in first gear, if I really give it hard, it makes a weird noise and the whole car vibrates... sounds as slightly metalic.

It happens anytime there is a lot of stress on the transmission and drivetrain. I was told that its probably the engine mounts since they are complete crap on my car, but I wanted to see what you guys might think.

It is easier to re-create the sound when moving from a stop while the wheel is turned in one direction.

I looked at the CV joints, tie rod ends, sway bar links, ball joints, wheel bearings and everything checks out good.

What do you guys think?

Like I said the engine mounts are gone, but before I place the order I wanted to see if it could be anything else :)

Thanks for the replies!

I get this too sometimes when pulling hard from 4th to 5th, definitely coming from the engine bay. It almost sounds like my short ram air filter vibrates so much that it's vibrating against the roof of the hood. I know there's some clearance between the air filter and the hood, so that couldn't be it--but that's what it sounds like.

If you figure out that it's the engine mounts, please let me know too, thanks.

I replaced the front engine mount and the vibrations in a straight line pull are completely gone.

However If I turn left while pulling hard, there is some wheel hop and vibrations still happening, which other engine mount could it be? I see the passenger one is starting to rip but no where near as bad as the front one was.

I think you should replace the left and right mounts they're easy enough to do and relatively cheap,.... then ignore the bottom one,... (they are a PITA to change).

Or just do this MOD that I did,.... I re-purposed a piece of rubber that washed up on the beach,...

Wow good thinking.

But I already replaced the front engine mount, was pretty easy.

Would I need to lift the engine by the oil pan to take off the side engine mounts? I really dont want to because the pan is rusty.

When I removed my engine mount for my t-belt change, I lifted (with my car jack conveniently located in the trunk), on the tab of metal on the AC pump just in front of the oil pan,..

You're only snugging up to it and there isn't much pressure on it (unless it's the only mount holding your engine).

You could just squirt some window weld or jam some rubber in the rear one if you wanna,... Nobody can see under there,... you can tell people you install 90 durometer urethane inserts.

When I "installed" my "inserts", I pushed up on the engine right at that mount to open up the gap (ripped part) to jam the rubber in,.. they're pinched in there pretty good,..

replace all engine at the same time, that is my suggestion, unless one fail prematurely. most of our mazda are due for engine mount replacement,

anytime one engine mount is broke there is more stress placed on the other mounts make the other fail prematurely
