egt gauge or air/fuel gauge?

Hey guys,

I'm getting a few gauges put into my car a boost gauge and either a air/fuel gauge or egt gauge, now don't they do somewhat the same thing? The egt gauge is more expensive and is more accurate but is it worth it?

THanks

from my understanding...the egt measures the temp on the turbo, and the a/f measure air/fuel...OF COURSE I COULD BE WRONG!

no doubt egt...it reads the temp of the exhaust gas in your exhaust mani..of the top of my head i think runner #4..not positive....o2 would be helpful..but not as good for tuning imo.

EGT

This reads your Exhaust Gas Temperature...

I think! :D

this has been debated already but i ill add my 2 cents and run for the exits when im done.
i seem to be one of the only ones here that has different views on the subject and for good reason. i have used them all and read way to much for my own good. but..........
because you have a MSP ( this might not apply to all)
i would suggest just a boost meter and an A/F meter. later a fuel PRESSURE gauge.
if you plan on modding up for serious power or to about 10 -11 psi on the stock turbo then DEFINATLY a WIDEBAND and an egt if you are planning on MORE mods later. in my opinion if you are sticking with your stock set up for now there IS NO NEED for an EGT at all.
let the flames begin

:p

i'd say get the boost and egt gauge. unless you're gonna get a wideband a/f, a regular a/f won't tell you anything other than letting you know whether you're in closed loop (the gauge will give you a nice light show) or you're in open loop (the gauge becomes a nice led light). at least the egt can give you an idea if you're running lean or rich...sorta.

an egt WILL NOT tell you if you are running rich or lean. it measures exhaust gas temperature ONLY. from there you need to gather other info like fuel pressure and current A/F ratio thru a wideband or your own STOCK O2 SENSOR to determine if the hotter temps indicate a ""lean condition "" OR more importantly a restrictive turbo and/or exhaust system. there is alot more to it than saying hey i am running 1500 degrees let me increase fuel thru the injectors.. it may make it worse.!!

what??!! the temp of the exhaust gas WILL tell you whether your running rich or lean (90% of the time) tuning is complicated...but i dont feel like going into what could cause a false lean condition....stuff like that.

apex again EGT readings WILL NOT give you a proper A/F ratio. NO MATTER WHAT.
there is no need to get into it about false lean readings and such. plain and simple it is only a measurement of EXHAUST TEMP WHICH WILL GIVE YOU A RELATIVE UNDERSTANDING OF GAS VELOCITY. there is no magic number or chart to look up and say at this temp i am at 12:1.
its a fantasy. you can only infer with the readings and use OTHER helpful info to determine the efficiency and validity of those temps. every car , every exhaust , every induction, injection, ignition on every car is different at EVERY COMBUSTION CYCLE. it is impossible to use it as a reference for the proper A/F ratio.

apex you are impossible. you have facts in front of you and you are disregarding them . maybe you should rethink who needs to be smacked;)

and you are disregarding 10+ years of tuning from dsmers and many other tuners out there using egt gauges...why dont you agree? cuz other mazda owners like rx-7 guys dont use egt's? if youd like me to, i can post everything you said on dsmtalk.com, dsmtuners.com, machvforums.com and see what kind of replies i get..dude....you will get wrecked...you are completely wrong

my dick is bigger than both of yours:cool:

so if your car is stock forget the gauges. its not like you need them. you need front wheels to drive on and move the car. you don't however need a boost, egt, or A/F gauge. but its your car and you do whatever you feel is necessary to it.

once you start modding it though thats a whole other story

that's why I don't understand why some people buy the most expensive colorful gauges that have alot of bells and whistles

apex i thought you were smarter than your current statement . you want everything to become a pissing match. thats fine go ahead with out me. i will say one more time so listen up good!!!!!!!!!!!

AN EGT MEASURES EXHAUST GAS TEMPERATURES ONLY. GIVING YOU A REFERENCE FOR GAS VELOCITY, EXHAUST PRESSURES , CATALYTIC CONVERTER , EXHAUST EFFICIENCY AND TURBINE EFFICIENCY. IT WILL NOT GIVE YOU A/F RATIO . THIS MEASURE MENT NEEDS TO BE USED IN CONJUNCTION WITH MANY OTHER TOOLS TO GIVE YOU AN UNDERSTANDING TO WHATS HAPPENING IN THE FUEL , IGNITION SYSTEM AND CUMBUSTION CHAMBER.

take that to any forum , club , hore house i dont care.
its a shame i had alot of respect for you untill now. sorry folks for the offtopic like posts. it wont happen again from me at least.
APEX NOW I KNOW WHY YOU SAID YOU ARGUE WITH ALOT OF PEOPLE ON OTHER BOARDS. ;)
