boost readings in different gears

I've been trying to set my JoeP MBC to around 9 psi. I've heard a 3rd gear pull is the best way to measure the level of boost, and I know that with our turbo it will spike 1-2 more psi than what it will level off at. But when I pull in 3rd gear it will spike and then drop off more than the other gears and settle around 7-8psi. Its harder to tell because my Blitz reads in hkpa. Anyway, when I pull in the other gears its spikes normally than levels off higher than 3rd gear does. So which should I measure by? I dont think I have any boost leaks, because I checked all the connections to the MBC and to the T fitting to the wastegate, and the other gears spike and level off normally, so I'm not sure.
I dont want to set it too high because usually when I get around 10+ I hear faint metallic rattling when I go wot and its probably detonation, but it only happens once in awhile. Untill I get colder plugs I don't know how else to stop the detonation besides turning down the boost. Out here in Cali we only have 91, so I'm sure that doesn't help either..wish we had 93...

Thanks for any suggestions..

Get rid of the Joep and got MBC. I did, and love it. IT truly is worht the money to have 4 different settings. Boost warning cut. ect ect. I got the Blitz.

Now, onto your issue, you will have higher boost levels in higher gears. The engine is working less in those gears, so the exhaust gasses move faster. Now, thge pining. GET NEW PLUGS LIKE NOW. even just 1 time detonation can cause utter disaster for your car. You will burn head gaskets, plugs, even push a rod through the side of the block if bad enough.

So that faint ratlling is detonation? Since a lot of people have said 9-10psi is safe I figured I wouldn't have to worry about detonation..but I guess not. I'm going to turn the boost down to normal levels till I get colder plugs..As far as mbc vs ebc..I know the ebc is easier to set, etc..but I like the mbc because I can go back to stock easily. My dealer isn't one of those cool ones...

yeah cali sucks. first turn down your boost, check if you are getting that metallic sound again. if you are, then it must not be detonation. either way, i would get colder plugs..(in cali too, 91 octane is bad)

Man!

That's too bad I can run 10-12PSI here on 93-93 octane and I don't have any pinging. I have been running this boost for about 8 thousand miles with two 1400 mile round trips to West Texas without issue and it really hasn't even effected my gas milage.
I did have to run 91 octane on the return trip the first time but I kept out of the boost the whole 700 miles. I just stayed in vacuum the whole time, short shifted, keep the rev's under 3500.
Preignition blows ass I will be listening very closely when the temps drop to make sure I don't detonate. I think I'll just get the copper plugs to be safe.

Yeah this is dissapointing..I thought 9-10 would be fine. I ordered the copper plugs so maybe that will help..but now I'm paranoid. I can't even listen to music..I'm always listening for that rattling noise...I hope its something else besides detonation, but I doubt it.

I've had my MBC in for awhile at around 7-8psi...but it didnt start making that rattling noise until last week. I'm going to take it off tomorrow and see what the boost reads and if the noise goes away. And while its off I might as well go to the dealer and see whats up with this "7500" mile checkup crap is about. They sent me a letter saying I should go in for this service. I dont need an oil change, so what do they really need to check at 7500 miles?
But if I dont go they'll probably void my warranty...asses

hey whats the plug part number i lost it and were to get them NAPA good. or advanced auto parts
