A chip tuning that might actually work

Goodness know this has been wrestled back and forth.

However, search through M247.com's sponsors, I noticed that Hypertech.com has a tunning box for the 4 cyl '09 Mazda 3 - should this then work in our M5s?

The exact items is Max Energy Sport Power Programmer - Part #62003
Lists gains on regular octane as +6HP +7TQ (seems within reasonable level)
as states that:
" Top Speed Limiter 25 - 75 MPH in 5 MPH increments, 81 to 255 MPH to match speed rated tires
Rev Limit -500 to +500 RPM
DTCs Read and Clear
Return Back To Stock -> big in my book.
Internet Updateable"

I have a msg out to tech support, they'll get back to me soon (I hope) and I'll share.

Here's the response I recieved from Tech Support. Let me know if you have any of this information for different years and maybe they can work something up!

We have not had request for the Mazda 5 before and this is the
first time I've heard of this vehicle. I just did a search and see that
it is a small mini van of sorts. The Mazda website shows it to come with
4 different engines and it does look like the 2.3 non turbo engine used
in the Mazda 3 is one of them. If you can locate the ECA (engine control
computer) to get us the numbers off the label along with the vin# off
the vehicle we'll be glad to do some checking to see what we can do. If
the calibrations are the same as the Mazda 3 we should be able to
support this application. Since we have not tested one of these exact
vehicles we do not know the location of the ECA. Thanks

Anyone else notice "this is the first time I've heard of this vehicle" -> see, there just is not much love for the 5 in the tuning market :(

It was the first time Jimmy had heard of it. We keep our tech guys in a dark closet with limited sunlight and block all outside communication except for incoming calls and emails! :)

There is a good chance that we will be able to support the "5" without too much trouble. I'll see if we can round up a local and get it in here for a look-see.

First of all, the graph at 4650 RPM shows an increase of 5 HP with premium but says at the bottom +7 @4650 RPM. That makes NO sense at all. I'm taking the graph as being correct, not what they've typed in at the bottom. The torque numbers look close.

Sounds like they are mushrooms at that point.

Keep us up to date as to what you find out. I know it's not a lot of gains, but it is at least something reasonable. Not like the +20 HP diode thing you see on eBay. I wonder if it would help out a CAI / exhaust. It might also be me, but the torque curve looks a little smoother (with normal gas vs factory).

I think one of our sponsor in our local club here in toronto sold 1 to a 5 but is not a member of the local club checkout nextmod in torontomazda3dotca go to sponsor section under nextmod there should be an item there for hypertech chip

Any updates Chris?

The Mazda 5 is on our engineering production schedule, but we've got some other projects that we are working on right now, like the Miata. I will make sure to update everyone on the forum when we get close to having something for them.

The graph is actually plotted from the numbers in the chart. The graph is done in Excel, then converted to PDF. It would look closer with a little bit better resolution.

can you feel 6hp & 7ft/lbs? Are there any mpg benefits?

We took the low rpm power at wide open throttle and blended the improvements into the part throttle areas and improved the throttle response. The car just drives better in the low RPMs. The car pulls away from stop lights with easy when tuned. Its very effortless, and makes the car even more fun than it already is. This is a major focus for our tuning since we all spend the majority of our time driving in that range, rather than just at wide open at the higher RPMs.

It is possible to see fuel mileage increases with this tune, depending on how you drive it. Average would be in the 1-1.5 mpg range. I wouldn't expect anything higher. This usually happens after you get used to driving the car with the tuning, and you're not putting your foot into it!

Just noticed that I've not seen any updates in a while on this. I'll try to see where they are at in the processes.

I found this. I have used their chips before back in the day.
it was a huge difference on my cavalier z24.

I see that they have performance options for Ford & GM -> don't see much for Mazda (certainly giving a nod to the relationship between Ford & Mazda). Even for the one thing, the "V-Force" that lists some Mazda's, tops out at the '08 model year.

Did I miss a product?

Too bad, wish there was a plug in play option. Would be easy to test and then pull out for warranty service.

I guess the link doesn't work after the fact
if you search thier site via car make model top right hand corner
they have 3 products Air/fuel and then these two listed below

Import ECU Upgrade Kit
Part #: 65002

The JET Performance Import Computer Upgrade Package is the solution to performance tuning import and domestic sport compact vehicles. Import computers do not have computer chips that are easily removed, making it necessary for JET engineers to either reprogram the vehicle’s existing chip or remove and replace the chip by desoldering it from the circuit board. The kit provides you with all the materials required to safely send your vehicle computer to JET’s lab for a high performance software upgrade. Once we receive your ECU it will be programmed according to the information you provide on the vehicle specification sheet to optimize performance and mileage to match your specific modifications. JET's exclusive Dynamic Spectrum Tuning provides optimal performance across the entire power band-not just at full throttle. Programming includes extensive modification to air/fuel ratios, ignition advance and boost pressures for turbo applications. More Details
