Yup..Clouds of White Smoke from my turbo

i said, go ahead, recommend what to do and all that blah blah, just dont start a stupid argument over it, everyone has there own opinions, i hate listening to people fight over damn engine oil

well seeing as how the factory recommended oil in the US is 5w30, that would be the oil you were implying. people want a resolution on what resolves oil smoking and this is just it. i've read of at least 5 people using 5w40 and don't have smoking after switching. but whatever i hope your turbo smokes.

and matt, saying what oil to use is part of helping with the smoking issue so pipe down.

Sure but there's more than one way to skin a cat. Using oil not of factory specs might not be the wisest thing to do. Do I know the solution? No, but personally I wouldn’t put anything in my car that wasn’t within factory specs (Just think, the Engineers at Mazda might actually know what they're talking about). Besides, I doubt using a 5w40 or whatever is going to permanently take care of the issue. It’s hit or miss with this turbo unfortunately and the only true legit way to take care of the problem is to get the turbo replaced under warranty and pray it doesn’t smoke after doing exhaust MODS. Your car will run on 87 oct and it's cheaper but that doesn't mean it's smartest thing to do in the long run...

ok so how do you plan on getting it replaced under warranty if it doesn't smoke with stock downpipe in place? when i put in the cp-e catted downpipe i started getting smoking at idle, and i doubt they would warranty the turbo with those parts unless your dealer really likes you. so i went back to stock downpipe to see if it still smoked and it didn't so obviously i can't prove to the dealer that it smokes. now after doing a lot of reading i have switched to 5w40 and just yesterday reinstalled my cpee-catted downpipe to see if this actually does fix the problem. like i said before, i know many others who made the oil switch and it stopped theirs and i can understand why it does. the thicker oil won't leak past the seals.

since our engines are direct injection the oil sheers a lot. after 3000 miles most 5w30 oil is sheered down to a 5w20 as proven in oil analysis. i think i have also read where some have said after an oil change the smoking has stopped, this makes sense if the oil is sheering as well. even a 10w30 oil has proven in some cases to resolve the smoking, it is thicker than 5w30 since there are less aditives to make it change viscosity's from cold to hot.

so if you aren't able to reproduce it for the dealer i would assume trying a higher weight oil. my dealer changes my oil but i bring them the oil i want put in.

Hey Bova

Im assuming youve also done the other tests like warm up the car then drive abit then shut off restart car in half hour, idle then should smoke. (read somewhere)

Ive just got a magnaflow (no other exhaust mods beside gutted intake)and have tried the various test for smoke ( long idling) and got nothing, maybe a wisp of smoke on startup but i can live with that. Guess the 2 cats keep enough backpressure/cleanup.
I would like to put on my test pipe again, last time it was a james bond smoke show for the person behind me. Just too embarrassing to keep on.

Will try 10w30 next oil change hopefully that works if not will go 40.

Thanks

I have not read this whole thread but i solved my turbo
smoke issues by changing the PCV.
A few other folks have tried thicker oils, this would especially help
in warmer states.

Cobb's new bulletin on adding a catch can seems to suggest that they think the PCV setup is at least one major cause of smoking exhaust. Probably not in the case of billowing smoke, but who knows.

oh i know....i'm trying to tell these guys that buy they don't want to go out of spec.

i poured baby powder in my exhaust pipe last night...

but when i went to start it this morning... there was SO mcuh smoke on start up... does that mean my seals are gone?

glad i could help :).

heres some input, speed3 back in buffalo had a full c-pe tbe with the high flow cat, and never had smoking issues, 24000 miles and he autoexe with it. ill find out what oil for all you fools

white smoke does not = oil burning. this car has many quirks, and one is the smoking issue. After installing an INLET pipe, i was the first to notice the smoking was drastically reduced, and nearly 99% removed. This led me to further my investigation and conclude there is an excess of COOLANT that is burning off and not the oil. Check your levels and see what you have burning.

Also... it is WRONG to say an exhaust modification causes a vehicle to smoke. This condition exists prior to the modification, and is usually just mitigated by the factory pair of converters. Even Mazda has NO CLUE what really causes the turbo to smoke... just ask 5 different dealers. You will get 5 different answers with NO evidence supporting any of them.

if you are burning coolant you have bigger fish to fry.
