Yahama 600R

Whats up guys. My brother and I were thinking about buying street bikes for a few years. I really like the Yamaha 600r and its on sale around here in south jersey for 6,400.00. I been looking around and that seems like a pretty good price. I just have a few questions,

1. I never driven a bike before, how hard is it?
2. Insurance, I heard its like 500.00 a year, is that true?
3. I drive stick now, but how different is the set-up on a bike?
4. Is this bike a good starting out bike?
5. Im gonna go to driving school, dont they take so money off your insurance for going to school?

I've never ridden a bike, but my friend just got a Yamaha R6. His insurance is like $200/month, with his car insured with the same company. Whether or not it'll save you insurance I'm sure you should take rider's safety classes. Be careful and good luck!

A sport bike is a lot more to insure than a cruiser. I was looking at a 4 year old Honda RC51 and the insurance was 1300 per year with a 3 month layover for winter. I bought a Harley brand new and my insurance is 550 per year.

Yeah. I thought it was gonna be that much. I cant afford that. I wont drive it enough nor wanna pay that much. I know the school gets you a discount but not that much. They might get you like 15%-20% maybe. I thought about getting a Honda 250ex quad, but theres not a lot of places to ride them. I dont know.

You could always move to NH, buy a cheap bike outright and ride with no insurance. Of course you are at your own risk. Live free or die.

If you've never ridden before, a sport bike like the 600R will kill you. Too much power for the novice rider. I agree with cone killer, take some riding classes before you step into a bike like the 600.

I will 100% go to a class. It just seems like it has less power then most. I seen hayabusa like 1299cc. This bike is a modest 599cc. Im just getting different quotes for insurance.

Im just comparing the one I want to a hayabusa or like a ducati. I know there all fast but im not the kinda guy to go like 150 on the highway or show off by doing wheelies. I rode quads and dirt bikes so I know the basics. I just want something different.

The R6 is a racebike with turnsignals. Get a SV650.

For some it's easy, for others it's hard. I'm a fast learner; for me it was easy. I hopped on my buddy's bike one day and it felt natural. Take a course and/or try a buddy's bike. Even if it's a dirt bike or something.

Insurance varies from one place to another. It also depends on the type (and size) of bike, rider experience, driving record, etc. Same thing as insuring a car. In general, insuring a bike is more expensive. A sportbike will cost more than a cruiser/standard/custom bike.

Left hand is your clutch, right hand is your front brake, left foot is your shifter (typically 1 gear down and 5 gears up), right foot is your rear brake.

4. Is this bike a good starting out bike?

Yes, the 600R is a decent bike to start. However, I would recommend getting a used bike if this is your first. A lot of people (myself included) recommend a 500 to start. This all depends on the bike your getting and on how much self-control you have. I know a lot of people who have started on big bikes and are terrific riders. On the same token, I know other who ahve started on small bikes and can't ride to save their life. Shop around, ask some local riders or people you know who ride.

5. Im gonna go to driving school, dont they take so money off your insurance for going to school?

I don't know how it works where you live but here in Ontario, taking a rider course helps a lot for insurance purposes. I belive it gives you a 10% discount. Don't quote me on that. Check with your broker.


FYI - I've been riding for 7 years. I'm on my 5th bike. I currently ride a GSX-R600. I've ridden many different bikes. I have many stories. If you need anything else, let me know. The 600R insn't a death trap. It's very tame compared to other 600s. It compares to the Katana 600, the ZX-600, and other modest 600s. The R6 is another story (but stories vary from one rider to the next).

You say you won't try speeding and doing wheelies ... trust me you will. It's a natural part of riding a bike. Be careful.

I've ridden the SV650s. Very nice bike. Good bike to learn on too.

LOL! Hehe, oops. You're absolutely right. Don't know what I was thinking. Now I feel like a dumbass. Clearly an honest mistake.

On that note, I'd like to try reversing it on my bike, but I'm not sure. We'll see. Maybe this season I'll try it.
