WTF? 4 points for a parking lot fender bender????

I'm actually going to switch to AAA to get a 5% discount...but 5% is chump change next to the 15% per point the f*ckin state tacks on. That surcharge will be the same for any provider.

I think I'm going to write a detailed letter...not sure who I'll send it to though. Maybe my state rep, maybe the newspaper.

AAA's quote just came in: $1,947.00 (current premium is $2,220.00 which takes effect Dec 17th). Needless to say, I'll be switching to AAA.

Overall it still sucks but at least you got a little relief by switching to AAA.

yeah chris, that sucks.

melissa was in a small accident back in 03' with $1200 damage to a 10 year old protege and $8XX damage to her 01 Sentra. she is still rated as an 01 i believe on the new MA rating system!

she is rated on the pacifica for about 1K per year, vs the $650 I would be rated on it.

i am rated on the ford at like 500/year with full coverage!

pisses me off on how much it screws people with good driving records and they get in these super mimor losses........

there is not much you really can do now.

I hope you put her as the primary on the Ford and you as the primary on the Pacifica...you'd save more that way I think.

The system is pretty bad but I think the real problem is a fixed $$$ amount for what is considered a major accident. It should be based on the total values of the car. I mean, to replace a bumper assembly on a 2007 BMW will cost several $1000 dollars while the bumper assembly on a 1990 Honda Civic might be $300.

An accident invloving two Civics gets classified as "minor" while an accident involving two BMWs gets classified as "major" just because the parts cost more? Who came up with that idea? At least insurance companies total cars when the amount for repairs is greater than a certain percentage of the current vehicle value.

That also means the guy who runs a red light and T-Bones a tractor trailer at 40mph causing an accident that runs up to may $50K + medical bills adding up to another $50K gets 4 points? And my wife taps a car in a parking lot and gets 4 points? Who's a bigger threat on the road here?

So not only should the "major" accident be determined by damage percentage of the total value of the car...it should also be determined by whether someone has to go to the hospital. I say if everyone is OK...it was a minor accident. If someone's head was decapitated, hmm now its time to stamp the "major" mark on that driver's record.

wish you could but when the new rating system started, they take the person with the highest rating and rate the on the highest rated car in the house. the only way to aviod that would be to exclude them from driving the highest rated car.

i totally know what you mean about your above statement and it does suck with how they classify a minor vs. major accident.

If you had the oppurtunity, you could have opted to settle this without the insurance company. The first time I had a fenderbender (that I was not at fault) the person at fault agreed to pay the quoted amount for the repair.
Granted it was about $500, and I had something to lose if he refused, but he kept his word and it worked out well for the both of us.

That sux man, best of luck to the both of ya.

I lucked out with exactly that^. My 1998 black Eclipse was hit twice in my office parking lot. Front and rear but nothing major. The front did need a new bumper as it was torn. Both times the people at fault left notes on my car and I confronted them and agreed on settlements.

Are you sure about that? Amanda wasn't bumped to the MS6 on our insurance. I am "primary" on the MS6 and "occasional" on the P5. She is the opposite. I don't think they can do that to you...if you claim to be primary on the Pacifica they can't pull the switcharoo just because they'll get more money out of you.

I wanted to to this but the woman filed a report the minute she got home. Amanda also remembers her mentioning a previous accident which she never got fixed. Personally I think she got more fixed than this accident caused...but those records are sealed and we cannot find out how much they billed our insurance company. Besides, Amanda is way to by-the-book and until she saw the price increase on the insurance she would have never agreed to paying her out of our own pockets. She'll think twice now.

Are you sure about that? Amanda wasn't bumped to the MS3 on our insurance. I am "primary" on the MS6 and "occasional" on the P5. She is the opposite. I don't think they can do that to you...if you claim to be primary on the Pacifica they can't pull the switcharoo just because they'll get more money out of you.

......check your dec page when you get it. i bet you are listed as the primary driver on the MS3, but her points will be rated on it and your points will be rated on the P5!

it is not that they want more money, they just want to make sure they put the driver with the worst record on the highest rated car in case they drive it and get in an accident. they are not listed as the priary driver, but they pobably will drive there car from time to time.

the only way to not have them rated woud be to sign a driver exclusion form. then if, the excluded driver drives and gets in an accident, there will ne no coverage from your ins co!

i know it sucks for amanda becasue I bet she is good driver. she was just in the wrong place at the wrong time.

It was simply a matter of her not pulling up hard enough on the eBrake when she took her foot of the brake pedal to back up. That's it...the parking lot was steep enough for her to roll forward and immediately under the SUV in front of her. Watch out for c-c-c-c-razy Amanda!!!!!

Am I getting this right? The friggin STATE OF MA tacks on a surcharge when you get in an accident??? WTF do they have to do with it???!!! Nanny Bastards. You people need another tea party up there. This time throw a Lexus in the bay!! That'll get their attention!

MA itself doesn't surcharge you, you get points on your license, and then the insurance company ups your rates. Since MA sets the exact rates and the insurance companies are not allowed to charge any more or less, this is the only way that you get an insurance hike as a result of the accident.

No, massachusetts DOES get the extra cash, or at least a significant portion of it. They set the rates and they reap the benefits. My insurance rep said they don't see a dime of the extra money and they have no choice but to charge me for it.
