WTB: Motor and Tranny - What are my options?

So my friend might be picking up a miata for $200 but it's missing a motor and tranny. I don't really know much about the miata's but I told him I'd ask. What are my options as far as the motor.... does anyone sell a fully built motor? This will be a project car for him, so I'm trying to find all the options. Any advice / tips?

the best thing I have seen for a motor option in a miata was a 13B rotory.

awsome fit,power/weight ratio,easaly modable,relatily cheap,great power band.

this setup makes one hell of a drift car.

What Wicked neglected to state is that a Rotary is a PITA to actually install into the car. There is nothing easy about making it bolt up. From the folks that I've raced with that have actually swapped one in, they've all stated that they would not do it again. Unless there is something that I am not privey to, I'd avoid a rotory at all costs.

Anyway, depending on what piston engine you are willing to install into the Miata, 1.6's can be had for roughly $200 on ebay and less elsewhere. Transmissions go about the same. Depending on who you talk to, you may even get a killer deal (I.E. I scored a free Miata driveline, engine included, just by B.S. with some random guy visiting the local junkyard).

What are the different motor sizes and what's the best for a turbo? How do the stock trannys hold up against a lot of horsepower? Are there any other options aside from the stock tranny?

he's right,it is a pain in the ass,I didn't mention it,because thats what i like in a swap.

you can do what my boy is in the process of,s2000 motor,or even the first one he was considering sr20det.

still really tuff to do.
the only swaps that are not terribly hard is carburated, any thing else realy is a PITA.

exept for factory.

Ok I'm thinking a swap from a different car would be too much trouble. Are all miata transmissions/motors universal or do only motors from certain years work on certain models etc. If that's the case I'll have to figure out what year the shell is that he's getting.

Miata chassis is the same. so a motor from a 2005 would still fit in a 1990.

if it's a 90-93, The easiest way to go is drop in a 1.8l. the rear end is the week link on Miadas. trannies can take up to about 300hp before you start to break them.

As far as a 'built' motor, FM is a popular choice. You can get a stroked 2.0 liter from them, with a big list of options.

It all really depends on what your friend wants...
