WShade, saw your videos....sweet. (also drove P5 today)

I drove a P5 tonight and then drove a WRX right after. Not impressed with the WRX, sure is fast...but not when you want it to be. In every other regard except headroom, I like te P5 better...did I mention it's 6 large less?

Oh yeah, on to WShade's vids. Looks great, have you ever had any pinging? I wouldn't expect you to, this engine seems like it can take 8 PSI of boost without a problem. I had my 98 A4 chipped to 12 PSI and that had 9.5 to 1 compression. Never a ping. Also how is the throttle response? in the vids it looks almost instant, again like my beloved and missed A4. Very nice car Mazda has built here.

Thanks! No ping. All is well. Boost turned down to 6.5 psi for now, temp was 102 degrees today. Installing aux fuel pump as a safe guard.

No boost controller as of yet. Manual turn of the wastegate lock nut.

I believe it was one of the import magazines...perhaps Sport Compact Car that had a showdown between the ghetto method and the more technological methods of boost control...and the old school kept it's own against the far more expensive new ways. :)

So say someday I get a turbo kit. Its all tuned and ready to go to for my conditions. What would happen if I took a road trip somewhere and went through mountains or extremely hot climates? Would pinging start? Just curious..

Your stock ECU is there to prevent just that. No one here really knows the limit, but it handles WShade's 8psi in a hot texas climate. Boost actually helps our 4 cyls A LOT at altitude. And if you had something like a J&S safeguard (not plugging here) to piggyback, then no, you would not get pinging. Hell, you might not even get it with the stock ECU, depends on what the limits are.

Since Mazda added a turbo to the "Mazdaspeed" protege without changing any internals and it runs 7psi of boost, I don't see why aftermarket turbos running the same or a little more would be any different, this engine seems to be a perfect candidate for adding a turbo. I was thinking I would want to go the NA route (Cams, pistons) but after seeing WShades vids, and the smooth and quick response out of the engine, I'm going the turbo route. Now with that power I will miss quattro, especially accelerating out of corners, but this car handles well enough that I can forgive that weakness. I can't wait.

A) What videos? If it's a turbo protege I wanna see!

B) The Mazdaspeed is running 7psi? Are you sure? They are getting 30hp from 7psi?

Thanks!

Awesome videos... wish my speedometer got up to 60 that fast.

30 more hp from a turbo at 7psi. :wtf:

That's lame.

We're tuning our turbo P5 at altitude in the desert with crappy gas :) No kidding - 4700', high of 100F today, 91 octane. Altitude doesn't really make any difference in pinging, so go ahead and take that long road trip.

8 psi should be easy as long as you can get enough fuel in and don't run too much timing. Manual boost control and electronic both have their place in the world....

well the turbo is fairly small with a small ic. i'm sure tuning the stock turbo will create plenty of power.
