wrong oil?

I used Shell Rotella Heavy Duty 5w40 synthetic base motor oil in my 03p5. I notice on the side of the bottle it says that it meets service designation SM but the owner's manual designates SG, SH, SJ, SL or ILSAC. It looks like the oil is made for industrial applications. Should I get it out of there? I need a good informed answer before I drive it! Thanks.

I've been digging around in the mazdaspeed3 forums and I guess a lot of those guys run this oil. Looks like SM is a new service designation that came out after our cars were made. Turns out Mazda actually issued a service bulletin recommending 5w40 synthetic oil to take care of some smoking issues. I figure if it's good enough for the Mazdaspeed3 it's good enough for my stock P5. Right???

If I felt I used the wrong oil I would drain it and refill with the proper oil

4qts of oil is cheaper then fixing a broken motor

Idk I'm just saying. It's primarily for diesel vehicles. Says so on the website and the back of the bottle.

Shell ROTELLA T Single Grade Oils are high quality single grade oils blended to provide excellent performance in diesel engines of many major manufacturers and in many gasoline, LPG or LNG engines (follow the correct performance/viscosity/ temperature guidelines).

It's not a single grade oil. It's 5w40. Looks like it's recommended in a lot of german and swedish cars, too.

I can go down to Walmart right now and pick up a jug of 5w40 Rotella that has that same picture on it. Change it if it doesn't feel right instead of trying to justify it.

While SM-rated oil is fine for the Protege, I'd avoid 5W-40 since Mazda recommends 5W-30 or 10W-30.

link/response

Thanks for all the opinions. Diesel motor oil is just heavier duty than conventional oil. It may have a greater phosphorous content, but not in this particular oil. As far as being 5w40 instead of 5w30, that simply means that I'll have greater friction resistance at higher temps. I still haven't heard a compelling reason to replace it. I'm open to an educated and informed response, however.

The website declares that this oil is fine for the older specs, sl, etc.

Here's a link.

If it's too thick, which it is, it CAN cause circulation problems through the engine.

FYI, Per TheMAN, 5w-40 is EDM recommendation for the FSDE. You should be fine with it unless you're running it in sub-zero temps all the time. I have a friend who ran Rotella in his Ram Truck and his early 90s BMW to fix a burning problem. No issues at all there.

this thread is funny... i mean seriously... if you feel you are using the wrong oil... change it out... use the correct oil in the first place
