ok guys and girls here is the deal im having surgery on my right shoulder next week and i wont be able to drive for at least a month. my question to you is up keep for the time it wont be driven. i.e do i change the oil before the long rest.. how often should i start it? things like that. any ideas or help will be appreciated

Tim

when you stor a car you trat the fluids with the same time frame.

IE you change the oil every 3 months!
so one month shoudl eb okay. Maybee just start it let it idle keep the internals lubed, fluid from sitting and let it go for like15-30 minutes as to recharge the battery from the starting!

Bummer. I am supposed to have shoulder surgery sometime but I keep putting the doc off 'cause I can't stand the thought of not driving (plus how am I going to get to work? - no public transit around here.) Seriously, if it is only a month or so, you don't have do to anything. If you want to be pedantic, get some gas stabilizer and dump it in the tank, then drive a few miles. You might start it up every week or so to charge the battery and listen to the radio.

For just a month, you dont need to do a thing, just bring your tire pressure up to 40 psi to avoid flat spots. You might need a boost though when you start it again after a month of sitting but your car is new and you have road side assistance.

Have a car at the shop that sits for about 2 months without being moved and we never see any flat spots on the tires. If you were going to see flat spots for a month of sitting I don't think adjusting the pressure to 40 would do much, maybe make the flat spot a little smaller but the weight of the car still makes a flat contact patch on the tire regardless. I spoke with a michelin rep about a motor home and he informed me it would take over 6 months of sitting for flat spots to occure and after the tires go through 1 heat cycle (highway driving) they would usually go away.

I think I'd warm it up, turn everything on and go up and down the driveway once a week just so it didn't start to think I didn't love it anymore.
You can shift between first and reverse with your left hand while stopped easily enough.

i feel for you man....... i also am going in for surgery. next wed. i am going in for an operation on my back. i have been fighting this injury for over a year, and it just isnt getting better. i guess that what happens when you get smashed into a steel I-beam by a 7500lb. forklift !! i will also just have my wife start the car every few days, let it get up to temp. then shut down.
i wont be able to drive for a long time....any locals want to come take me for a ride in my car every now and then ??? my wife cant drive stick !!

that sux bro... good luck with that.
yea im a big guy and reaching across my body to shift with my left hand is impossible lol .

definitely overinflate your tires by a few psi and I'd repark it whenever you start it just to help a little more in the avoiding flat spots thing. flat spots on tires are about the most annoying thing in the world.

my car sat for months at a time last year when i was traveling for work, I didnt do anything special, and it was just fine, started right up like I had only parked it 10 minutes ago...

most will agree that there is maintenance for a parked car just like there is for a driven car.
