I just bought a laptop since my desktop went up in flames last month(literally) and I'm not so excited about running XP due to the amounts of spyware/adware there is floating around. I really liked my DOS-based OS :(

What are the best programs to dl inorder to keep my computer clean? I'll be getting Ad-Aware asap but I want other suggestions.

go to microsoft.com
they have a beta spyware program that blows away my adaware program
its very thorough and is real time, so it blocks spyware.

yeah, that's what I am using right now, but I am running Win 2000 Pro. it works very well, I don't have any spyware right now.

99.9999999% of spyware comes because of "I.D. ten Tee" users.

Like when you click yes to the question do u want to install this program by some unknown company.

I've had XP on my laptop with SP 1 for 3 years now. 0 spyware 0 virus. I refuse to upgrade to SP2 because of the firewall.

Some Tip to keep your computer clean.
1. Use webmail. Download attachement from only people u know and only after a online virus scan.
2. Always click no when it prompts to to install something. If you want to install something go to a creditable site and download the exe for it.
3. Don't bother with Firefox(its slow compared to IE, the fastest is opera). Besides If someone wants your computer it does not matter if you are running opera or netscape 1.0, they are going to get into it.
4. The most important one. STOP LOOKING AT PORN

Also
when you get a fresh copy of windows
go to run-> type in msconfig -> start up tab and remember the program. things like Virus scan will be in there too so remember that one as well

when you get a spyware
go to run -> type in msconfig -> start up tab and uncheck any additional suspisious things you find.

You can turn off the firewall. There are tons of security fixes so even if you couldn't turn off the firewall you should upgrade anyway.

Here's my tips:
1) You absolutely need a firewall of some kind. It can be a Linksys firewall/router connected to your cable connection or a software based firewall such as the one that comes with SP2, but you must have something.
2) You absolutely need antivirus software that updates itself daily.
3) You should also have spyware software that updates itself.
4) You should set Windows XP to download and install updates automatically.
5) You should always click "no" or close any box that asks you a question from a browser. If you have to install something, go to the website (e.g. go to macromedia.com to download the flash plugin)
6) You should never open mail from people you don't know unless you are expecting something. Most email programs have filters or rules. The first filter you setup should take all mail from people not listed in your contacts and put it in a junk folder.
7) Never keep unencrypted personal information on your computer. Don't keep an excel spreadsheet with your bank account numbers and balances on your hard drive unless the file is encrypted.
8) Backup important documents regularly. Put them on CDR/CDRWs, Zip disks, flash drives, floppy, whatever. Always have a spare copy around. If the files are very important, place them in a safe or safety deposit box in case of fire.

1. Spybot Search and Destroy - Install Tea Timer and pay attention to it's alerts
2. Yahoo Toolbar - it does work - no spyware/adware and it blocks pop ups (I personally don't use this - but I know many who swear by it. I prefer to kill pop ups with ALT+F4)
3. Hijackthis - decent GUI - excellent BHO remover - not automatic however, so you'll be using google or another search engine when you don't recognize something.
4. Service Pack 2 for XP - the default settings are excellent for most users. You might occasionally need to add some "trusted sites".

That should help. I also use Norton Internet Security - but only because they sent me a free copy of it because I'm a Network Admin. McAffe and Norton are both fine. I don't see the need for a "suite" type product, just get the A/V and keep it updated.

isnt the tea time stuff for europe?
would not recomend hijack this to anyone that isnt "proficient" with reg entries and stuff.

lol - no - tea timer is not just for europe - though it's kinda funny to think of it like that.

I've been a geek for so long that I have a hard time imagining people not being able to use something like hijackthis. The registry shouldn't be so scary to people - it's just a matter of not messing with the wrong stuff. You can always back up your registry before you start making changes.

For people that are afraid of messing with the registry - start - run - msconfig. If it's missing from your computer - you can grab it from Microsofts site online. That tool is a bit safer and will let you remove many startup type items.

Agreed - I use IE primarily, but Firefox is quite a bit faster. Though I have noticed abnormal timing in flash - not sure if this is an effect of latent speeds or flash plug-in implentation. In fact - this is why I'm still using IE as my primary browser. Other than that - firefox is great.

6.0.280.114. IE if faster because its part of the core

It's only faster to load. But on a fast enough computer, Firefox loads just as quick.

Actual browsing...FireFox is much more efficient, and loads and renders pages quicker. Especially when tweaked ;)

that is right.. i can't stand long loading time.. i rather have a 1 sec loading time and 2 sec per page wait then a 5 sec loading time and a 1 sec per page wait.

Just the way i am tho

You want it quicker? open a firefox tab and type in about:config.

set the network.http.pipeline.maxrequests to something like 30. It will be just as fast, if not faster than IE.
