Winter weather mileage

Same deal here I think. We just made the trip from Maryland to visit the parents in Ohio. Back home we avg 29-30mpg mixed. On the drive here with and avg of 70 mph with a Thule box on top we got 26.5 mpg. Now for some reason I can't get better than 24mpg mixed. Not sure what's going on. Did not have this issue last winter.

I have a brand new CX-5 AWD GT and am getting 22 MPG with almost 80% city driving. I was hoping to get closer to 24-25 and hope it gets better. I am in the cold North East so the weather may be playing a role.

Second tank got closer to 23 on the on screen computer. Calculating the gas used for the distance traveled, it is actually closer to 22 MPG. This is pretty much all city driving and exactly what my old CRV was getting.

I am worried about my fuel usage as it has crept up from 8.4L per 100Km (33.6MpG) to now 9.1L/100K (31 MpG) - I understand that the first couple of thousand kilometers the car will use more fuel. I blame it for now on the amount of devices I have to turn on like the rear defroster and running my heat in the car at full heat on setting 3. I did notice that it takes forever to heat up the cabin - not until like 30 minutes in the drive do I feel more comfortable. I see I am not doing that bad - I do have a FWD only, so I would expect to see a little higher usage with an AWD.

My third tank had 50% highway miles and that helped increase the overall MPG numbers to 26.2 MPG. That is based upon my calculation and the same as the computer. I tend to fill the tank up to the top with at least 2-3 pumps before stopping as well.

My CRV never got 26 MPG ever so call me happy. Car has about 900 miles on it and I enjoy it tremendously!

edit. One thing I notice is that letting the car warm up for more than 2-3 minutes really hurts the overall MPG. For example, last night, stopped the car with half tank of gas at exactly 26 MPG (for this tank fill). Warmed the car up for about 5 minutes at 430 am and the MPG had dropped to 25.7. This car burns lots of gas while warming up.

My MPG took a turn for the worst. It's been averaging about 23mpg the past month. Hopefully it goes back to my normal 28mpg this spring.

Mine has gone up 1-2 L/100km, combination of the winter gas and the switch to winter tires and steel rims.

It was -23C here this morning, feeling like -35. Poor CX-5 was pretty unhappy when she started up.

Ive been cold starting mine for the last month or so. It really doesnt like to start cold, but I assume no car really does. Id get a block heater if this was permanent, but my garage should be complete soon.

I just did a road trip to DC and ended up getting 32 MPG for the trip. 375+ miles on 12 gallons of gas. Call me happy.

I agree, sometimes the CX-5 really shines. I just drove to Boston about a month ago and fuelly calculated 33 mpg. I'm also in central-ish PA, so it was about a six hour hike, just over 400 miles. Range showed about 50 miles remaining, plus the spare two gallons in the tank! Conditions must have just been magical that day. Also, I cruised at 65 for the entire trip.

I have been considering trading up for a new Mazda3, but they only have 13 gallon tanks! I care slightly more about range than I do about fuel economy.

Yes, on the drive down, I did a constant 67 MPH on I-95 and 60 on I-370. The way back involved some city driving and such but still ended up with 32 MPG. This car likes being set at a certain speed and just cruising along.

I'v averaged about 24-25 before winter... now down to about 22-23... not much difference but still down a bit...

Well, dragging up an old thread. My car is basically a year old. And as winter snuggles in on the East Coast, my mileage is dropping. After being in the 26-27 MPG range in the summer, my fuel economy has dropped to ~24 MPG. My average speed has not changed (28-31 MPH). Love the car but it sure does like warm weather!

Glad I found this thread. I bought my '15 Touring in October and never got higher than 24 MPG. I do mostly city driving so that doesn't help me either. Do they start winter blends that early? Hoping to get higher MPGs once warm weather comes back.

The winter blend is the "normal" (less regulated) blend and is cheaper to refine so they start selling it as soon as practical. Each state has their own regulations but I think by Oct. there aren't any states that still require the higher spec summer fuels.

My winter mpg drops about 2-3 mpg but I attribute most of that to colder starts, longer warm ups and driving in snow. The summer blend fuel does return slightly better mpg but that doesn't account for the bulk of the difference. A warmer engine is simply more efficient and warmer air is less dense than colder air leading to less aerodynamic drag.

You can see two years of my mpg results (and the seasonally differences are significant):

I will point out that my mpg's did not rise as much last summer because every summer tank had extensive off-road driving in the mountains (a lot of usage of 1st-3rd gears). So most tanks were down to around 30-33 mpg instead of 33-37 mpg like I saw the previous summer with very little off-road driving.

It might be the winter blends but I think this car just does not like the cold. The MPG will go up once the temps increase. I should mention that at 24 MPG, which is low for the car, I am close to 4 MPG higher than with my old CR-V!

Thank you for bringing this post to the top, as I was wondering why my mileage has dropped and now I know why.

My summer drive mix was 24 MPG since my commute to work is 20 minutes, but I do drive a lot for work as well so highway time I get about 28MPG. So far in my first winter I drop from 24-20/21 MPG if the AWD kicks in a lot. Not bad, not great either.
